Description	:	John Ayers was born at Wheatland, N. Y., February 20, 1832 and died at his home in Creighton April 4, 1918 at the age of 86 years, 1 month and 16 days. His parents moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1840, and a few years later to Shalersville, in Portage county. From there they moved to Racine county, Wisconsin and about a year later to Jancan county, where Mr. Ayers ran a large lumber mill for many years. His parents moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1840, and a few years later to Shalersville, in Portage county. From there they moved to Racine county, Wisconsin and about a year later to Jancan county, where Mr. Ayers ran a large lumber mill for many years. He was engaged in this business for 26 yrs. and prospered until 1870 when a fire swept his property away in a short time. The mill was located on an island in a cranberry marsh, and Mr. Ayers bought berries from the Indians in season and one year had 3000 bushels to dispose of in the cities. During the first years of his life in Wisconsin he was employed at rafting on the Wisconsin and Mississippi rivers making trips with lumber and shingle rafts to point on the river above St. Louis. For many years after the loss of his mill he was employed at various occupations, but feeling that the west offered more opportunities he emigrated to Knox county in June 1876 and early in July secured a homestead and timber claim a few miles from Verdigre. The trip from Wisconsin was made after many days of weary, tiresome traveling. On February 1, 1870 he was united in marriage to his brother's widow, Mrs. Geo. Ayers to this union two children were born, Mrs. A. A. Baker and Niles Fred Ayers. Mr. Ayers and his wife endured the hardships of the early day settlers, blizzards, droughts, grasshopper pests and hard times but refused to yield to conditions and ultimately reaped a comfortable reward. For over twenty years they resided on the homestead and in 1896 purchased town property and moved to Creighton where they in 1903 remodeled and enlarged a beautiful home and enjoyed life until he passed away. To the original homestead he added from time to time more land until the property now consists of over 700 acres besides his beautiful home in Creighton and other town property. He leaves to mourn is loss his loving wife, one daughter, Mrs. A. A. Baker, residing on the old homested and one son N. F. Ayers also residing on one of the farms, one brother Niles Ayers of Burlington, Wis. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church at Creighton Monday afternoon, April 8th. The Masonic lodge of which Mr. Ayers has been a member since 1865 were in charge and the services were conducted by Rev. Smith, pastor of the M. E. church. Interment was made in the Creighton cemetery. To the wife, daughter, son and other relatives we extend our heartfelt sympathy in their hour of sorrow and bereavement.
