Outlook - 14 November 1929 - Page 4 - Shooting Accident - The only hunting fatality in this district over a period of many years occurred last Wednesday at Allans Lake, about ten miles south of Middleton. The victim was Olman Johnson of Torbrook, who was shot by a rifle in the hands of Charles Adams, of Berwick, who mistook him for a moose. At the time the accident occurred Johnson was engaged setting trips in a hollow surrounded by alders. The flashing of his hand axe as he chopped at the bushes gave the appearance of an animal raising and lowering its head and led to the shot being fired. Immediately following the shooting, Charles and Joseph Adams came to Middleton and reported the accident. James Adams and their brother remained in the woods with the body until a party of twelve men from Nictaux Falls and Torbrook arrived. Thursday morning a jury was summoned by Dr. S.N. Miller as coroner and consisting of the following, Harry Ritcey, foreman, D.C. Langille, N. Cummings, F. Martyn, W.S. Downie, C.N. Phillips, P.E. Black, C. Phinney. As counsel, A.L. Davidson represented Charles Adams and K.L. Crowell represented the family of Olman Johnson. After hearing the evidence the jury brought in the following verdict. The said Olman Johnson came to his death by being accidentally shot by Charles Adams of Berwick, Kings county, through carelessness in not taking due precautions before firing the fatal shot. We, the jury, recommend that the government insert a clause in the Game Act whereby every hunter must not fire until he has a clear and uninterrupted view of his object and further give more publicity to this particular clause.
