Born In Alsace-Lorraine Alouis Yender was born in Alsace-Lorraine, May 1, 1843 and came to America with his parents when 4 years old. They located on a farm three and a half miles north of Naperville, Illinois. At the age of 18 Mr. Yender enlisted on Aug. 13, 1862, in Company, 105th Illinois, for service in the Civil war under General Graves. He went into action at Frankfort, Ky., on the trail of Morgan in 1862-63, and then traveled to Buzzard Roost, Ga., with Sherman on his march to the sea, on the trail of Gen. Joe Johnston. The first real charge in which he took part was at Resaca, Ga., and through Atlanta. The division burned Hickory, went through Dalton and Big Sandy where Mr. Yender was injured by a rebel bullet. He wrapped a part of his uniform around the wound and went on with his company. They went on to Pitch Creek, Ga., where General Hooker took command. They marched back through North and South Carolina and Virginia. Mr. Yender stayed in the service until peace negotiations were completed. He is said to have "walked more miles in his war service than the average adding machine can furnish figures for. He was honorably discharged June 7, 1865. He was united in marriage to Miss Louise Rieser, of Wheaton, Illinois, in 1867 and they located at Naperville, Illinois, where they remained for a few years. They came to Iowa in 1874 and settled on a farm nine miles northeast of Carroll. He retired from farm work and came to Carroll in 1900, purchasing the home on Second street, which he afterward improved and remodeled. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Yender. The six who survive are Mrs. Henry Schlinck, Mrs. Michael Heim and Frank Yender of Auburn; Mrs. Victor Schirck, of Carroll; Mrs. Rose Krueger, of Auburn; and Miss Mary Yender, at home. He also leaves two brothers, Louis Yender, of Early, Joe Yender of Naperville, Illinois, a sister, Mrs. Hubert Pfaff, of Auburn, 15 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren. Since the death of Mrs. Yender on May 25, 1906, Miss Mary, has cared devotedly for her father and faithfully tended him in his last illness. Two years ago Mr. Yender was seriously ill with pneumonia but recovered although he never regained his former strength. He had been around the house attending to his little duties until four weeks ago when he went to bed and from then on was too tired to get up. The family were, present at the time of his death. After he retired from the farm Mr. Yender passed his time doing carpenter work. He was a cabinet maker for his own pleasure and many are the articles possessed by his friends which were made by him. He was a quiet, retiring man but liked to have his friends call at his home. He was a devout Catholic but for the last two years had been unable to attend services. He was one of the faithful members of the G.A.R. post and never missed attending the services on Memorial day and he always accompanied the post to the church, services on Memorial Sunday.
