Description	:	Alpha W. Fries, 88, of Kearney died Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at her home. Alpha was born Jan. 22, 1923, in Stockville to Omer and Maude (Urling) Guthrie. On Dec. 7, 1941, she married Wayne Fries in Oberlin, Kan. He preceded her in death. Survivors include her sons, Roger Fries and his wife, Martha, of Madison, Ala., David Fries and his wife, Judy, of Tucson, Ariz., Douglas Fries of Wichita, Kan., and Lindell Fries and his wife, Beth, of North Platte; daughters, Beverly Scott and her husband, Randy, of St. Anne, Ill., and Joyce Hibberd and her husband, Robert, and Marilyn Fries, all of Kearney; brothers, John Guthrie and his wife, Carol, of Odessa, Wayne Guthrie and his wife, Janice, of Alma, Cecil Guthrie and his wife, Donna, of Holdrege and Dale Guthrie and his wife, Lou Ann, of Ragan; sisters, Geraldine Richards of Cambridge, Florence Maxwell of East Lake, Colo., Thelma Soderberg and her husband, Vern, of Northglenn, Colo., and Eleanor Rogers of Holbrook; sister-in-law, Linda Guthrie; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews. She attended Sunny Plains District 63 in Frontier County to the eighth grade. She and Wayne lived in Elm Creek for 38 years and moved to Kearney in 2003. She enjoyed reading, Bible study, poetry, crocheting and playing the keyboard. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; son, Lester L. Fries; daughter-in-law, Penny Fries; brothers, LaVerne Guthrie, Omer Guthrie and Harold Guthrie; and sisters, Alberta Covey, Garnett Covey and Myrna Guthrie.
