WIHLM (1923-2007) Rockford - Funeral services for Alphonse Eugene Wihlm, 84, of Rockford, will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Roseville (2395 Hwy 14), with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Roseville. Visitation will be held at St. Mary's School gym, Roseville, from 4 to 8 p.m. today and one hour prior to the funeral services. A Rosary service will be at 6 p.m. conducted by the Knights of Columbus and a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Alphonse Eugene Wihlm was born Sept. 5, 1923, in Cerro Gordo County, north of Dougherty, son of Joseph and Clara (Merfeld) Wihlm, and died Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City. He received his education in Dougherty at St. Patrick Catholic School and graduated in June 1942. After school he worked as a farmhand. He was united in marriage to Rose Delores Esser at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Carterville on Oct. 12, 1943. In April 1945, Alphonse entered the U.S. Navy and served with the Navy Seabee, Battalion 533 until April 27, 1946 when he was honorably discharged as Seaman First Class. Following his discharge, Alphonse and Rose stared up farming in March 1947 east of Dougherty and over the years they farmed in the Dougherty, Rockford, Marble Rock, Greene and Roseville area until his recent illness. Alphonse is survived by his wife; 11 children, Bill, Dan, Larry, Dick, Kathy, Dave, Connie, Barb, Rosie, Judy and Mike; 32 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren (3 more on the way); four step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph of Sheffield and Bob (Barb) of Cedar Rapids; and a sister, Mary Paulus of Mason City. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Rita Paulus; a stepbrother, Francis Baker; a daughter-in-law, Karen Wihlm; and two step-grandchildren, Shannon and Little David True. Memorials may be directed to the Alphonse Wihlm Memorial to be designated for the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit of Mason City in care of the family at 2331 Hwy 14, Rockford, IA 50468.
