W. E. (ALTA) COATS DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS Funeral services for Mrs. Alta (W. E.) Coats were held Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. in the McAninch chapel, with the Rev. Caring for the flowers were Mr. and Mrs. William Stevens and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Tibben. Pallbearers were Bud Wahl, Richard Coats, Ronald Coats, Stan Jack, Bobbie Coats and Richard Park. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Alta B. Farrell, daughter of Sam and Isabelle Farrell, was born on a farm south of Victor in Lincoln township, Iowa County, Iowa, Feb. 9. 1879. She received her education in the public school and graduated in the class of 1897. She was united in marriage to Willard E. Coats of Victor, Sept. 12, 1897 and tothis union six children were born. After their marriage they farmed south of Victor for two years, then bought a farm northeast of Victor, where they made their home for many years. They celebrated their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries on the farm. Mrs. Coats was a lifelong member of the First Methodist church of Victor, a member of the W.S.C.S., the Ruby Rebekah lodge, and the Order of Eastern Star. She was active in all these organizations as long as her health permitted. A short time after the death of Mr. Coats in August 1958, Mrs. Coats fell and broke a hip. She was taken to St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids and for the past three years had been a patient at the Watts Nursing Home in Marengo, where she received the best possible care. Death came there at 6 o'clock Friday evening, Oct. 6 at the age of 82 years, 7 months and 27 days. She leaves to mourn her passing, two sons, Noel of Victor and Bruce of Cedar Rapids; three daughters, Mrs. Ruth Light, Mrs. Louis Ship and Mrs. Jeannette Schrader, all of Fontana, CA.; 11 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Rex, one sister, Hilda Watkinson, and one brother, Wendel.
