Stratford Courier April 24, 1919 Obituary Alvah Blair Lynde was born in Essex, Essex county, New York, December 3, 1839, and died at Stratford, Iowa April 16, 1919, being 79 years, 4 months, 13 days old. He came to Iowa in the year 1868 locating in Tama county, removing to Boone in 1871. He remained there until the year 1873 at which time he located on his farm in Webster county residing there until March 1st, this year, when he moved to Stratford. He was united in marriage to Frances Janett Smith July 17, 1873 and to this union four children were born, two of whom died in infancy. The surviving children are: Mrs. John Quinn and Fred Lynde, both of this place. He leaves to mourn his passing, his aged wife, one daughter, one son and three grandchildren, besides an unusual large circle of friends. He was the last of a family of five to survive, three brothers and one sister having gone before, all living to a ripe old age. In the year 1880 he was converted at a revival meeting held in the Bass school house conducted by Rev. Bradshaw of Fort Dodge. For years he has lived a consistent Christian life and for a number of years he was Sunday School superintendent and class leader in the community where he lived. For the long period of forty-five years deceased lived on the same farm in the same neighborhood and during that time he was an advisor to his neighbors. He was a man of generous impulses who was many times called in to settle little local differences and held various offices of trust and he was known by many as "Squire" Lynde. The stranger, even though a beggar, never failed to find food and shelter if he sought at his hands, and he was at home by the bedside of the sick and delighted in all kinds and neighborly offices. He had borne adversity bravely and enjoyed prosperity quietly. He had filled the various relations of life, as son, husband, father, brother, friend and filled them well. Who can do more? He was a man who united sound sense with strong convictions, and a man with even temperament, well tried to mould the elements of pioneer society into form and consistency, and did in raising a high standard of citizenship in our young and growing state. How much this community owes him and such as he it is impossible to estimate, though it would be a grateful task to trace his influence through some of the more direct channels. But he is gone. Another name is stricken from the ever lessening roll of our old settlers, and a [? illegible ?] in the street of life, and a lonely home, are left to ?, surely they will miss him. It must be so those tender human ties cannot be severed without a pang. His life work was well done and wearied with life's duties and cares, weary of suffering and waiting, he lay down to rest. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon in charge of the Masonic lodge of which deceased was a highly honored member. The services were conducted by Rev. H.I. Pharo from the M.E. church and the remains interred in Oakwood cemetery.
