HIS HEAD IS CRUSHED With His Brother and Another Workman, Banister Was Moving Safes from Vaults. Alvin B. Banister, 21 years old, who lived at 22 Market, was killed instantly about 11:35 o'clock Sunday morning when his head was crushed between a heavy iron safe and a wall in the Emporia post office, where he was helping move furniture, preparatory to the opening of the new postoffice addition. Alvin Banister, who operated a private truck with his brother, Clarence Banister, was working extra for the Clow Transfer company, which had the contract for moving several safes in the postoffice. Alvin and Clarence Banister and Harry Windsor had moved two large safes from one large vault to another in the post office and they were moving two other safes from one end of a small vault to the other end when the accident happened. One of the safes, the smaller of the two, was on top of the large safe and was lashed securely by chains. The two safes, which were about 18 inches from the end of the narrow vault, had been placed on 2-inch pipe rollers and Alvin Banister was between the wall and the safes, when the two safes suddenly fell against the wall, crushing Alvin Banister's head and pinning him there. No one was touching the safes at the time they fell, workmen said, and no one knew how they happened to fall. The smaller safe did not fall off the larger one. L. H. Barnes, postoffice clerk, was standing near by at the time and he called others in the office. Additional workmen were secured and they worked more than an hour before they could move the safes with block and tackle and planks, to free the body. The weight of the safes was so great that the plaster wall was dented, showing clearly where Banister's head and shoulders had been. A large crowd gathered around the post office quickly after the accident, but no one was allowed inside, except postoffice officials, R. F. Clow, manager of the transfer company, and the workmen who were moving the safes. Postmaster Harry Osborn and his assistant, E. J. Lewis, were called immediately after the accident. HAD MOVED SOME SAFES The transfer company which employed but few men on moving jobs, and did not employ them regularly, did not carry insurance. Mr. Clow explained today that he had allowed the insurance to lapse last summer because he had been getting little work and did not employ men regularly. The insurance is not compulsory under the workmen's compensation act in cases where so few men are employed, it is said. Mr. Clow, under a similar contract, had moved the same safes several years ago in the same manner which was employed when Banister was killed. After Banister's body was taken from the postoffice Sunday, work on the moving job was stopped, but it was resumed this morning with different men on the job. Alvin Banister was born March 2, 1911, in Rice county. He was married August 24, 1929, to Opal Hamilton in Wichita. He came to Emporia about seven years ago. He is survived by his widow; one son, Billy Gene, 2; his father, Wallace Banister, Wichita; four sisters, Mrs. Erma Cook of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Marjorie Tidmas, Mrs. Thelma Hine and Miss Lena Banister, all of Wichita, and one brother, Clarence F. Banister, 102 Market, Emporia. Alvin Banister was a member of the Methodist church at Little River. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the H. M. Ferren home, 9 Rural. Interment will be in Maplewood cemetery. Rev. J. S. Bunch, pastor of the Bethany Congregational church, will conduct the service.
