Following World War II, he was... Read More	Alvin E. Thomas Sr. McCUNE -- Alvin E. Thomas Sr., 89, of McCune died Saturday, March 8, 2008, at The Heritage in Girard. He was born April 18, 1918, near Butler, Mo., to Dolpha and Stella (Clark) Thomas. He attended schools in Cherokee County and graduated from McCune Rural High School in 1937. He attended a business college in Kansas City, Mo., and Kansas State College at Pittsburg. He taught three years at Freed and Monmouth rural schools in Crawford County, worked at Kansas Gas and Electric near Strauss and the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons. Following World War II, he was a cattleman and farmer until he retired. He married Eleanor Marie Ross on July 6, 1940, in Columbus. She preceded him in death on March 13, 1974. He married Elizabeth L. Depue on Oct. 22, 1977, in McCune. She survives of the home. Other survivors include four sons, Calvin L. Thomas and his wife, Louise, Francis L. Thomas and his wife, Susan, all of Girard, Melvin C. Thomas and his wife, Anne, of Burlington and Alvin E. Thomas Jr. of McCune; a stepson, Stephen L. Foster of Jackson, Wyo.; a stepdaughter, Joan B. Foster of South Padre Island, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Rockefeller of Topeka; and a brother, Lloyd Thomas of Potomac, Md. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Effie Thomas and Elsie Reynolds; and four brothers, Otis, Leslie, Virgil and Leroy. The service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at McCune Methodist Church with the Revs. Myron Stover and Fred Bisby officiating. Burial will be in McCune City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Murdock Funeral Home in Columbus. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, and these may be left at or sent to the funeral home, 132 E. Pine, Columbus, 66725.
