Edith Alma b. 29 July 1878 d. 21 May 1879 DEATH OF ALVORD A JEWETT A Well-Known South Deerfield Veteran and Business Man Alvord A Jewett, 68, a lifelong resident of South Deerfield, died early yesterday morning after a week's illness with pneumonia. Mr Jewett was born in South Deerfield Oct 15, 1837 and was son of Moses Jewett. In 1868 [sic] he married Julia Kentfield of Montague. Three children were born to them, two of whom are living, Mrs Kittie Edna Crafts of South Deerfield and Delmer Jewett of Amherst. Another child, a daughter, died in infancy. He also leaves three brothers - Martin of North Adams, Charles of Whately, Dwight in the West and a sister - Mrs Israel Smith of Whately. Mr Jewett was the first man to go from his native town in the war of the rebellion. enlisting in this city June 21 1861 as a private in Co. G of the 10th regiment, Massachusetts volunteer infantry, in which he served until the expiration of his term of service, when he was discharged July 3, 1864. He was promoted to the rank of corporal during the last year of his service. He participated in numerous engagements being in the following battles: Fair Oaks, Va., Malvern Hill, Va., Antietam, Md., Fredericksburg, Va., Chancellorsville, Va., second Bull Run, Gettysburg, Wilderness and Spottslyvania Court House, being constantly under fire night and day from May 5 to May 12. He was wounded in the last named battle on May 12 afterwards being confined in three different hospitals before his discharge. Mr Jewett also took part in the great march from Fredericksburg to Gettysburg 120 miles, the distance being covered in two days and one night, the last five miles done in double-quick time. Mr Jewett was a charter member Myron E Stowell Grand Army post and at his death was its commander, having served in that capacity about seven years. He was also a charter member of Wequamp tribe of Red Men and had held numerous offices. He was a member of Morning Sun lodge of Masons Conway, having taken his third degree three weeks ago. For eight years he was a member of Lathrop lodge of Knights of Honor. Mr Jewett had been an active business man, running a large farm, raising eight to ten acres of tobacco. For the past twelve years he had been in the pickle business, his goods being branded, "Sugar Loaf Pickles." He paid annually thousands of dollars to the farmers in the vicinity for cucumbers. Mr Jewett was interested in town affairs, but had held no town office. He was a member of the South Deerfield gas company, the village improvement association, and a trustee and superintendent of the South Deerfield cemetery association. Mr Jewett was also active in securing the charter for the South Deerfield water supply district. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the Grand Army hall, and will be in charge of Morning Sun lodge of Masons. [published Sunday, March 5, 1905 in The Springfield Republican]
