She was living with her parents Thomas (27) and Lucy (24) Cogshall in the town of Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island. Thomas was a fisherman. There were two other children in the home: Thomas Jr. (4) and William (7 months, born in November 1869). Everyone was born in Rhode Island. Alzada is in the 1880 federal census as Alzada "Coggeshall." She was then listed as 12 years old. She was living with her parents Thomas J. (36) and Lucy (34) Coggeshall in the Dent Township, San Joaquin County, CA. Thomas J. was working as a laborer. The other children in the home were Thomas (14), William (10), John (6), Sarah (4), Etta C (3), and Lewis C (4 months). The family moved to California in or about 1875 as John and the older children were born in Rhode Island and Sarah and the younger children were born in California. Alzada is in the 1900 federal census as Alzada Owen. She was then listed as 32 years old, born in August 1867. Her husband was George W. Owen. He was 39 years old, born in June 1861. George was a farmer who was renting the land he tilled. They were living in the Douglas Township in San Joaquin County, CA. Alzada had delivered four children and all were living in 1900. However, for some strange reason, none of the children seemed to be in the home. Nonetheless, three of the children were. There were Bert Emart (14, born 1885), Ella M. (12, born Oct 1887), and Alice A. (5, born Dec 1894). The fourth child was obviously not in the home. The mother of the three children was born in Rhode Island (it was Alzada) and the father was born in Missouri (not George). The fourth child, based on the information in the 1910 federal census, may have been by another man besides Mr. Emart. Alzada is in the 1910 federal census as Alzada Owens. This census clarifies a number of things. Alzada was only married to her husband George W. "Owens" for 10 years. It was the first marriage for George, but it was the third marriage for Alzada. She had given birth to nine children and eight were living. Alzada was 42 years old and George was 47 years old. The four children in the home were Thomas H. (9), Lucy O. (8), Mary E. (7), and Sarah E. (4). The one child who died had to have been born to George Owen(s).
