Description	:	Amanda was born in Pella, Iowa, and moved to Kansas in 1869. From the Downs 75th Centennial Celebration Book, 1954, "J. H. Wolters, many years deceased, with his wife and three sons, Henry, John, & Chris, and one daughter, moved from Pella, Iowa, in the spring 1871. They homesteaded what is now the Henry Vander Giesen farm. Mr. Wolters and his three sons had gone out west to kill the winter's supply of buffalo meat, leaving the mother and daughter at home with provisions to last until they returned. They were caught out by the great... Read More	Amanda was born in Pella, Iowa, and moved to Kansas in 1869. From the Downs 75th Centennial Celebration Book, 1954, "J. H. Wolters, many years deceased, with his wife and three sons, Henry, John, & Chris, and one daughter, moved from Pella, Iowa, in the spring 1871. They homesteaded what is now the Henry Vander Giesen farm. Mr. Wolters and his three sons had gone out west to kill the winter's supply of buffalo meat, leaving the mother and daughter at home with provisions to last until they returned. They were caught out by the great November storm and were delayed several weeks and in the meantime the supply of provisions had given out. The mother had heard of the process of making hominy with lye, but never having made any, did not know how much lye to use and how to get it out of the corn afterwards. Eating a quantity which they had made, they both were made very sick by the lye and the daughter died from its effects. To add to the horror of the lonely and half-starved woman, she was obliged to keep the body of the dead girl in the house for ten days, before the return of her husband and sons."
