Description	:	Jan Heukelman Wolters immigrated to Pella, Iowa,1847,one of the original members of Dominie Scholte's colony. Jan is pronounced "Yahn" & is Dutch for John. His correct birth year is 1814 authority Zutphen municipal archives. He was the 5th of 12 children born to Gerrit Jan Wolters and Derkje Heukelman. He was an apothecary and the first merchant in Pella. On June 13, 1850 he married Gysbertje Welle. They had two daughters, Dirkje, May 22, 1852, married August 4, 1870 to Herman Nollen. The second daughter, Mietje, was born October 10, 1853, died October 18, 1855. Gysbertje died December 27, 1854, age 29. Both Gysbertje and Mietje are buried in the Welle Farm Cemetery (which see), near Pella, Iowa. On July 23, 1855, J. H. Wolters married Helena C. Nieuwenhuisen. They had six children born at Pella, John Heukelman "Henry" Wolters, born September 26, 1856, married Aberdina De Bey, died about 1898, Philippine Islands, Gerrit Jan Wolters, born May 5, 1859, married Katherine De Bey, died July 23, 1952, Portis KS, Christian H. Wolters, born Sept 5 1861, married Mattie Verhage, died July 7, 1913, Downs KS, Amanda Wolters, born 1866 died 1871, plus 2 infants. In 1867 J. H. Wolters founded the Zutphen colony in Ottawa County, Kansas, 17 miles from Salina. This colony failed and Wolters went back to Pella. He and his family moved to the same region in 1869 and two years later to Osborne County, where he homesteaded a farm two miles south of Dispatch, near Downs, Kansas.
