June 24, 1938 - Carroll Daily - Mrs. A.J. Coffield, 88, a pioneer resident of Carroll county, died at 5:15 Friday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs L.G. Patty, 526 North Court Street. Although Mrs. Coffield had been in failing health for the last several months, she had been fairly active until three weeks ago, when she collapsed and fell at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Patty where she had lived for the last four years. She had been seriously ill for the past week and in a critical condition since Thursday morning. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Huffman funeral Home with the Rev William Yingling, minister of the First Presbyterian church, officiating. Burial will be in the family lot in the Carroll cemetery. The body will rest at the funeral home until the time of the services. Mrs Coffield who, with her husband Benjamin W Coffield, now deceased, came to Carroll county in 1870, was born Amanda Jane Andrews, daughter of Alden and Mary Jane Colvig Andrews, at Somerton, Belmont county, OH August 14, 1849. She was one of a family of eight children, the only survivor of whom is one brother, Samuel Andrews, now 91 years old, who lives at Okeene, OK. Last fall Mrs Coffield enjoyed a visit from her brother, who came from Oklahoma to see her. Mrs Coffield was reared in Somerton, where she met Benjamin W Coffield, whom she married there March 26, 1868. In the spring of 1870 Mr. and Mrs. Coffield came by railroad from Belmont County, Ohio, to Carroll County. In contrast to eastern Ohio, which was covered with wonderful timber and fruit trees, the young couple found Carroll County a wide stretch of treeless prairie. They settled in Eden Township on the Nishnabotna River, three miles south of where the town of Templeton was begun about twelve years later. Mrs. Coffield had a fund of stories to tell of the hardships and privations of early pioneer life in the new country, where rattle snakes by the hundreds infested the bottom lands on which she and her husband settled. They lived in a small shanty and drank water from the Nishnabotna River. They were fourteen miles south of Carroll, the nearest trading point, but in order to get across sloughs and small unbridged streams, they had to drive twenty two miles to take their produce to market. In the fall, when the acres of hay were dry, came the prairie fires, which often left the country seared and blackened. Wild game was plentiful in those days, and flocks of prairie chickens, sandhill cranes, wild geese, wild ducks and deer came to the Coffield farm and ate at the hay stacks or in the corn field. In 1891 Mr. and Mrs. Coffield and family left Carroll County to live on a farm in Audubon County, not far from Coon Rapids, where they were residing when Mr. Coffield died in 1913. Mrs. Coffield and her daughter, Louise, continued to live on the farm until four years ago this summer, when they came to Carroll to make their home with Mrs. Patty. Mrs. Coffield was the mother of six children. Twin sons and a daughter died in infancy and a son, Fred Coffield, died in 1911. Surviving Mrs. Coffield are her two daughters, Mrs. L.G. Patty and Miss Louise Coffield, both of Carroll, one granddaughter, Mrs. Harold Bohnenkamp of Sioux City, and one brother, Samuel Andrews of Okeene, Okla. Mrs. Bohnenkamp has been at the home of Mrs. Patty for the last week and Mr. Bohnenkamp joined her here today. Mrs. Coffield was a member of the Evangelical Church, which she joined many years ago.
