Dec 25, 1913 - Carroll Times - Benjamin W. Coffield, a pioneer of the southern portion of Carroll county died in Carroll Wednesday morning at four o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L.G. Patty, at the corner of Sixth and Court streets. The immediate cause of death was internal hemmorrhage due to cancer of the liver. Mr Coffield sustained a fall a year ago last June since then his health has never been what it had been prior to that event. During the last eight months he has steadily grown worse with little hope for any improvement, his last days were free from pain and he passed away peacefully and without fear. Mr Coffield was born September 24, 1843 at Somerton, Ohio, his father being Thomas Coffield, a native of Ireland, a man of rare education for the time and a deep student. The early life of Mr Coffield was spent at Somerton, where he enlisted in the Army of the Union August 12, 1862, serving until he was mustered out in June 1865, when the war was practically ended. He was a member of Co C, 116th Ohio Infantry and at the battle of High Bridge, VA on April 6, 1865, he received a slight flesh wound and was captured but was exchanged shortly after and mustered out. Those who served with him speak in highest terms of his conduct as a soldier in which capacity he was faithful to all duties entrusted to him. In March, 1868, he was married to Miss Amanda Andrews also of Somerton, and their first home was at that place. In 1870 however they came to Carroll county, which was being settled up. They first located on Brushy Fork, near Dedham, at what was known as Maloy's Grove. A little later he bought a farm a little south of the present Templeton where he lived for 20 years, his trading point for most of that time being Carroll, which was the nearest railroad station. Later he bought a farm in the same locality but in Audubon county where he resided for the next 21 years. Six children were born to Mr & Mrs Coffield of whom 3 died in infancy, and one son Fred died in Carroll about 2 years ago. The surviving children are Mrs Josephine Patty and Miss Louise Coffield both of whom with their mother were with him when he died. His mind was clear and rational up until the hour of his death and shortly before his death he asked those around him to sing some of the familiar songs of which he had been fond. The deceased was a membor of the Grand Army and was Commander of the post at Dedham up to the time when its meetings had to be discontinued because he remained the only one of its members who was able to attend meetings. He retained his strength and activity up until the accident above mentioned June 1912. He lived a clean, well ordered life and was an honored and useful citizen of the community in which he made his home. A few months before his death he joined the Methodist church at Viola, Iowa, having been reared in that faith and a lifelong attendant on its services. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, at the home of Dr. L.G. Patty and interment will be made in the Carroll cemetery, where his son, Fred, was laid to rest two years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Andrews, of Okeene, Oklahoma, the former a brother of Mrs. Coffield, arrived Tuesday afternoon and were present at the death of their friend and brother. They will remain until after the funeral.
