It has been some time since the Delta folks have heard anything jingle out here in Kansas, and perhaps some of our friends thinks we are dried up, blowed away by the fierce Kansas wind, dropped in the deserts and drifted over by the awful seed storms. But not so yet. We have been in the great west nearly four years, and have seen wet and dry seasons, poor crops and good ones. We have become much attached to this country; we see no difference in the wind here and in Ohio. We have windy days, and so had we in old Buckeye, and while Ohio people have been wading in mud, we have been enjoying the best of roads and fine weather up to the 12th of this month, when a very big snow fell, the heaviest we have seen here yet. It has remained quite cold since, thermometer playing around zero. Sleighing is good but farmers are not prepared for such, as it seldom comes so here. Our corn crop last year was simply enormous; such piles of corn as some of our farmers have piled up in their yards on the ground, would frighten Fulton Co. farmers. The little cribs in Ohio 4 x 24 wouldn't be of much consequence here. The crop being generally good, prices are low. Shelled corn at present only brings 18 ½¢ per bushel. In order to get good price for our corn we ought to have cattle and hogs enough to consume our crops, which would give us far better prices for our farm products. There are somewhere near 1,000 head of steers being fed in our vicinity this winter which consumes much of our neighborhood crop, but with all that, while the weather was good, three or four thousand bushels of corn was marketed a day at our town. Oats was a good crop outside of the hail belt, but prices low. There is but little wheat raised in our immediate vicinity. My family's health has been remarkably good since we are here. We call this a healthy country although death slips in and snatches a citizen out occasionally. It's surprising to think how many of our old acquaintances around Delta has been swept away since we left. Judging by the paper and advertisements, Delta is changing fast. Already it does not seem like the old town we was raised by. The Atlas is a real welcome caller. We only wish it contained more of the different neighborhood news. We are glad to hear that the U.B. church is loyal to the old church. Though not acquainted with Rev. Lowman, he has our best wishes in his fight for rights. For fear of wearying your many readers, I close, believing and hoping that since, only one paper is printed in Delta it will be a good one. A. McQuillin." Jun 8, 1905: "I notice that my subscription expired May 23rd, which by the way is our wedding anniversary, and do you believe it? It's been 31 years already! Can it be! But here is another $. We were much surprised to hear about the Green tragedy. We believe that about 15 minute lynch rule would not be out of place in such cases. Say, is that Alex Cameron west of us, our old friend Alick who married the little King girl? Why we are almost neighbors. Family is all well, weather is fine.
