A 17-year-old high school student in Ione died Friday after her estranged boyfriend shot her in the chest, then turned the gun on himself, the Amador County Sheriff's Department reported. Amber Marie Yager, a lifelong resident of the Ione area who attended Argonaut High School in Jackson, was flown to San Joaquin General Hospital in French Camp on Friday afternoon and died five hours later, according to sheriff's officials. Authorities said Yager's ex-boyfriend, 21-year-old Jason Alan Wikel of Ione, shot himself in the head and died at the scene. Wikel entered Yager's home at the 2600 block of Village Drive through an unlocked door armed with a 12-guage shotgun around 3 p.m. Friday, according to Amador County Undersheriff Karl Knobelaunch. Yager locked herself in a bedroom when she saw Wikel, who then shot the lock off the bedroom door and forced his way inside, Knobelaunch said. In an effort to escape, Knobelaunch said, Yager jumped eight feet from the bedroom window into the yard but was shot in the chest by Wikel, who was still inside the room. Wikel then went outside, sat down next to her and shot himself in the head. Knobelaunch said the couple broke up about a month ago. Yager did not have a restraining order against Wikel, and there are no reports of previous violence between them. When Wikel arrived at the home, Yager's roommate tried to call 911 from the kitchen. The woman, whose identity was not released, told officers that Wikel pointed the gun at her and she dropped the phone. She ran out the back door to a neighbor's home to call for help. Yager's father, Kim, was not home at the time of the shooting. He arrived at the hospital, authorities said, but disappeared after Yager died. The Sheriff's Department was unable to contact him Saturday. Neither Yager's roommate nor her family could be reached for comment Saturday. The shootings are under investigation, and autopsies will be performed Monday. The last murder in Ione, population 3,500, occurred in 1999. That case involved a man who beat his wife to death.
