William G Cheney Bernard L Cheney Ambrose V Cheney II Thomas McGiffin Cheney ------------------ Note: this memorial updated May 3, 2020 with obituary information provided by Cara on April 19, 2020: Great Falls Tribune (MT), 15 July 1964 Old Time Range Rider, Ambrose Cheney, Dies Stanford--Ambrose "Kid Amby" Cheney, one of the last of the old-time range-riding cowboys, died at a Helena hospital where he had been a patient for 10 days. He had undergone surgery after a fall in Helena which broke his hip. Services will be at the Stanford Presbyterian church Thursday at 2 p. m. Burial will be in Stanford cemetery. Cheney was born at LaHarpe, Ill., April 7, 1874, and came to Stanford in 1888 when he was 14. He first worked for the Judith Basin Cattle Pool roundup and worked with that outfit until the cattle were moved from the Judith Basin across the Missouri river in 1890-1891. It was during this time he earned his nickname, Kid Amby, since he was one of the youngest members of the cattle crew. For about years he worked for the Bear Paw Pool with headquarters near Chinook. Later he homesteaded on Surprise Creek with his father, Linus Cheney, and brother Melvin Cheney and half-brother, Gerard Berges. He retired from ranching in 1940 to make his home in Stanford. He married Elizabeth McGiffin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nat McGiffin, pioneer Great Falls area residents, in Great Falls Dec. 16, 1903. Cheney was a member of the Judith Basin County Historical Society and was honorary president of the Montana Cowboys Association. He served as deputy stock inspector at Stanford for more than 20 years. Charley Russell, noted Great Falls western artist, was working with the Bear Paw pool at the time Cheney was there. Cheney has offered much background on Russell to the artist's biographers. Survivors include his widow; a daughter, Mrs. Carl Gunderson, Havre; six sons, D. L. (LeRoy), Seattle; Charles, Portland; Dr. Truman Cheney, Fort Meade, S. D.; William, Helena; Bernard, Vancouver, Wash.; and Thomas, Palo Verde, Calif.; 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A son, Ambrose, Huntington Park, Calif., died in an auto accident two years ago. Several nieces and nephews also survive. ------------------ A book about the life and times of Ambrose Valencourt Cheney was written by his son, Truman Cheney: "So Long, Cowboys of the Open Range", published in Janaury 2000 by Falcon Distribution. As of December 20, 2010 copies are still available on Amazon reseller website from various sources. There is a nice review written by Barney Considine, whom I suspect may be a relation of sorts to this Cheney family (Ambrose's mother maiden name may have been Considine).
