THE EMMERTS OF MARYLAND Amelia's branch of the Emmert family came to America from Bavaria in 1732 when Johann Jorg Friedrich "George" Emmert (1718-1796) stepped off a small ship named ‘Loyal Judith’ in colonial Philadelphia. George and his wife, Eve Maria Graff, became naturalized British subjects in 1751, but then disavowed the king in 1778 when George pledged allegiance to the State of Pennsylvania before Judge Peter Spycker in Berks County. George Emmert's son was Leonard Emmert, the beloved "Old Pathfinder" of the Brethren church. Leonard was born to George and Eve Maria in Bethel Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, British Colonial America in about 1745. He served as a militiaman in the Revolutionary War before turning away from Lutheranism and in 1798 moving his family to Washington County, Maryland to join many other followers of Alexander Mack settling there. Leonard Emmert's impact on the growth of the Church of the Brethren would reverberate down through the generations, and would reach into Illinois, Wisconsin, and even overseas to India and Denmark. Leonard Emmert was Amelia's great-grandfather. In the generations following Leonard’s death in 1804, many members of the family emigrated to Illinois in the 1840s, then to Iowa in the 1860s and 1870s, most of them carrying the Church of the Brethren west with them. A smaller number went south to Berkeley County, Virginia (West Virginia after June 20, 1863), and that is where Amelia spent her later years. A LIFE LIVED Amelia and her 12 siblings grew up on her family's handsome farm near Funkstown, Maryland. All her sibs, save a brother named Victor, lived to adulthood. Maryland was caught between the Union and Confederacy during the Civil War, and Washington County was hotly contested by both sides. In the leadup to the war in 1859, the abolitionist John Brown had sought support from the Emmerts and other anti-slavery Brethren faithful as Brown prepared to seize the federal armory at Harper’s Ferry. On September 12-13, 1862, Maryland's first battle raged around the Brethren church at Brownsville. The bloodiest single-day battle of the war was fought at Sharpsburg a few days later, wrecking the Brethren church at Antietam in the process. Confederate troops would seize horses, livestock, and provender from farmers, giving worthless script in return. Black Freedmen were taken prisoner and sent back into slavery in the Deep South. And in the summer of 1863, Gen. Robert E. Lee's army passed near Ezra's farm on the way to Gettysburg, and again on its way back to Virginia the following week. Amelia married William F. Stewart in Washington County, Maryland, on November 10, 1868, when she was 19 years old. William was 27 and had evidently not served in either military during the war. We think Amelia and William had three children: Mary Belle (1876–1945); John William (1877–1924); and Robert (1879–1913). All were born in Berkeley County, West Virginia where the couple moved before 1870. Amelia's mother passed away on December 28, 1884, in Beaver Creek, Maryland, at the age of 73. Her father passed away on November 21, 1885, in Beaver Creek at the age of 78. Amelia's husband died on February 22, 1904. His remains were buried in the Green Hill Cemetery in Martinsburg, West Virginia. Amelia continued to live in Martinsburg, and she died there on September 7, 1912, when she was 63 years old.
