THE EMMERTS OF MARYLAND Mollie's branch of the Emmert family came to America from Bavaria in 1732 when Johann Jorg Friedrich "George" Emmert (1718-1796) stepped off a small ship named 'Loyal Judith' in colonial Philadelphia. George and his wife, Eve Maria Graff, became naturalized British subjects in 1751, but then disavowed the king in 1778 when George pledged allegiance to the State of Pennsylvania before Judge Peter Spycker in Berks County. George Emmert's son was Leonard Emmert, the beloved "Old Pathfinder" of the Brethren church. Leonard was born to George and Eve Maria in Bethel Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, British Colonial America in about 1745. He served as a militiaman in the Revolutionary War before turning away from Lutheranism and in 1798 moving his family to Washington County, Maryland to join many other followers of Alexander Mack settling there. Leonard Emmert's impact on the growth of the Church of the Brethren would reverberate down through the generations, and would reach into Illinois, Wisconsin, and even overseas to India and Denmark. Leonard Emmert was Mollie's great-grandfather. In the generations following Leonard's death in 1804, many members of the family emigrated to Illinois in the 1840s, then to Iowa in the 1860s and 1870s, most of them carrying the Church of the Brethren west with them. However, many others remained in Maryland, and in particular those like Mollie's line who had inherited or acquired land, or who achieved high office or business success. A LIFE LIVED Mollie had at least a dozen siblings, all but one of whom lived to adulthood. The children grew up for a time on a successful family farm, then moved to the Funkstown area where their father had gone into the milling business with their uncle, Henry Newcomer, in 1857. Mollie came of age during the American Civil War. Maryland was caught between the Union and Confederacy during those years, and Washington County was hotly contested by both sides. For much of the war, Confederate troops would seize horses, livestock, and provender from farmers, giving worthless script in return. And we know that in 1863, Mollie's father received vouchers pertaining to goods and services "rendered to the Confederate Government." In the summer of 1863, Gen. Robert E. Lee's army passed nearby Mollie's home on the way to an appointment with destiny at Gettysburg, and then again in defeat as they scrambled back to Virginia the following week. During the war, Black Freedmen in Maryland were taken prisoner and sent into slavery in the Deep South. But on a happier note, Mollie's brother, Benjamin, issued and recorded a Deed of Manumission freeing the slave named Simon Samuel Turner so that the young man could enlist in the 30th Regiment of Colored Troops, United States Army. POST-WAR After the war Mollie's father went to Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia, where he went into the dry goods business with Benjamin Franklin Fiery, the husband of Mary's sister, Amanda. The store, known as Emmert & Fiery, was a great success. Tragedy struck when Mollie's sister, Sarah, died on November 1, 1871, in Salisbury, North Carolina. Sarah's body was returned to Maryland for burial in the family plot at the Beaver Creek Cemetery. Mollie evidently moved to West Virginia with her parents after the war, and there she married a widowed Baptist pastor named Oscar Farish Flippo on January 1, 1878, when she was 30 years old. This made Mollie the step-mother to as many as 10 children born by Roxie (Collier) Flippo, Oscar's first wife who had died in 1874. In 1880 the census found the Flippo household in Suffolk, Virginia, where Oscar was a minister. LATER LIFE; DEATH Mollie's mother passed away on December 28, 1884, at the age of 73. She was buried near Sarah at the Beaver Creek Cemetery. Mollie's father entered into rest less than a year later, and he too was laid to rest at Beaver Creek. The 1898 city directory for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, listed Oscar working as a "sec." at 1420 Chestnut, and living (presumably with Mollie) at 226 N 19th. Mollie seems to be missing from the 1900 federal census, but an "O.F. Fillippo" was recorded as a clergyman and one of eight boarders in the Schuyler home in Philadelphia. It's hard to know precisely what to make of this. Wherever she may have been in 1900, Mollie died on February 28, 1903 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when she was just 55 years old. The body was committed to the earth at Green Hill Cemetery in Martinsburg, West Virginia, near many of her cousins who had left Virginia for that area after the Civil War. When Rev. Flippo died in 1906, he was evidently buried next to Mollie based on the fact that the couple share the opposite faces of the same gravestone. ◙ ◙ ◙ ◙ Researched and written by P. A.
