Emmert was born on February 14, 1842, to Mary Emmert nee Newcomer, age 30, and Samuel Emmert, age 35. Sarah had at least a dozen siblings, all but one of whom lived to adulthood. THE EMMERTS Sarah's branch of the Emmert family came to America from Bavaria in 1732 when her 2d great-grandfather, Johann Jorg Friedrich "George" Emmert (1718-1796), stepped off the ship, Loyal Judith, in colonial Philadelphia. George and his wife, Eve Maria Graff, became naturalized British subjects in 1751, but then disavowed the king in 1778 when George took the Oath of Allegiance to the State of Pennsylvania before Judge Peter Spycker in Berks County. Sarah's great-grandfather was Leonard Emmert, the much-honored "Old Pathfinder" of the Brethren church. Leonard was born to George and Eve Maria in Bethel Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, British Colonial America in about 1745. He served as a militiaman in the Revolutionary War before converting from Lutheranism and moving his family to Washington County, Maryland, in 1798 where he purchased a 410-acre plantation named 'Delemere'. A LIFE CUT SHORT Sarah was 19 years old when the Civil War began. It does not appear that her father or brothers were called to serve in the military. Nevertheless, Maryland was caught between the Union and Confederacy during the Civil War, and Washington County was hotly contested by both sides. In the leadup to the war in 1859, the abolitionist John Brown had sought support from the Emmerts and other anti-slavery Brethren faithful as Brown prepared to seize the federal armory at Harper's Ferry. On September 12-13, 1862, Maryland's first battle raged around the Brethren church at Brownsville. The bloodiest single-day battle of the war was fought at Sharpsburg a few days later, damaging the Mumma Church as already described above. For much of the war, Confederate troops would seize horses, livestock, and provender from farmers, giving worthless script in return. And we know that in 1863, Sarah's father did in fact receive such vouchers pertaining to goods and services "rendered to the Confederate Government." In the summer of 1863, Gen. Robert E. Lee's army passed nearby the Emmert home on the way to an appointment with destiny at Gettysburg, and then again in defeat as they scrambled back to Virginia the following week. Black Freedmen in Maryland were taken prisoner and sent back into slavery in the Deep South. But on a happier note, in March 1864 Sarah's brother, Benjamin Newcomer Emmert, while serving as co-executor of the intestate estate of his deceased father-in-law, Elie Crampton, issued and recorded a Deed of Manumission freeing the slave named Simon Samuel Turner so that the young man could enlist in the 30th Regiment of Colored Troops, United States Army. MARRIAGE Sarah married George Washington Grimm in Washington, Maryland, on January 4, 1866, when she was 23 years old. It seems likely that George was an employee of Sarah's father at the Emmert & Newcomer Flour Mill in Funkstown. The couple evidently were in Niles, Michigan, for the birth of a daughter, Maude, on October 18, 1866. We do not know why they went to Michigan. The couple next went to live in the Georgetown neighborhood of the nation's capital where a son, Edgar, was born on April 8, 1870. The 1870 federal census showed George W. "Grimes" working there in a flour mill and Sarah keeping house. Sarah died on November 1, 1871, in Salisbury, North Carolina, when she was 29 years old. We do not know why the Grimm family was there. Sarah's remains were returned home to Maryland, and buried in the Beaver Creek Cemetery near many other members of her birth family. ◙ ◙ ◙ ◙ Sarah's obituary from the Hagerstown Torch & Light newspaper (Nov. 15, 1871): DIED. In Salisbury, North Carolina, on the 1st inst., SARAH EMMERT, wife of Geo. W. Grim [SIC], and daughter of Samuel Emmert, of Funkstown, Md., in the 29th year of her age. But a few years has lapsed since the deceased parted from the home of her parents a bride, clothed in robes of purity and innocence. Now she has left desolate the house of him upon whom she bestowed her plighted vows, and a void in the hearts of friends and relatives that is only filled by the hallowed sanctity of sweet recollections. She passed away like a dream, and before her spirit took flight, she conversed of eternal life. She is now at rest with Jesus, in whom she put her trust and whom she served faithfully all her life - She has gone from us never to return. Oh! happy hour when we shall meet and stand triumphant in Heaven! Her remains were brought to Funkstown on Friday, and interred at the Tunker Church at Beaver Creek, of which she had long been a consistent member.
