Read More	Ingram or Ingraham ------------------- The Weekly Calistogan, December 29, 1880 The Small-Pox Attracts Attention It was finally admitted by all last week that the cause of A. B. Ingram's sickness, at his father's residence, two miles down the valley from Calistoga, was really the small-pox—not an ordinary fever nor the varioloid, but a genuine case of small-pox, and a malignant case too, as the man died last Sunday morning at about 4 o'clock, and was buried by his family on their premises. The general understanding as to the cause of the man's sickness, and his death subsequently, made people in Calistoga understand the fact that something should be done for protection. Accordingly, a meeting of citizens was held last Sunday for the purpose of adopting some measures to prevent the spread of small-pox in this vicinity, and the following Committee was chosen: John Kip, Dr. Smith, E. R. Woolley, Dr. Reid and John Shells. The Committee received certain instructions which they have carried out, but as there are no other cases they have very little to do. It is very probable that if parties have thus far escaped contracting the disease there will not be any cases in town, even if others occur in the Ingram family. For the present none of the Ingrams come to town. What they require is left where they can procure it, and they make their wants known without coming in close contact with any person. ------------------- ------------------- The St. Helena Star, December 31, 1880 Last Saturday evening, December 25, a young man named Ingraham, living about two and one half miles below Calistoga, died from small-pox and was buried Sunday. He had been in San Francisco for some time and contracted the disease in that city. Others of the family are reported sick with favorable symptoms to result in small-pox. The young man died at his father's house, where we understand there is a large family of children. ------------------- ------------------- St. Helena Star, November 3, 1944 Originally reported under the headline of St. Helena's Early Days From the Star Files, 1881 There was a bad epidemic of small pox in San Francisco, and an outbreak of the disease in the Ingraham family, two miles this side of Calistoga, at a place formerly called "Kayworth." The entire family of father, mother, daughter and two sons died, and were buried in the small cemetery at the side of the county road. ------------------- ∼Named Amos Burgess Ingram, used Alphonso when he was "full of himself." In 1850, IL w/parents, 1860, CA, 1870 CA with wife Louisa John Springer and her son. In 1880 Great Register, Mendocino County, CA. During the Civil War, he served in an Army Unit from Mendocino County, mostly fought Indians in Eastern OR. Established Camp Logan in Grant County. Attained rank of Captian, sometimes called Cap or AB. He tried running a hotel after the war in Vancouver, WA, but was unsuccessful. Relocated to CA. It was while searching for his "errant" second wife, Elizabeth Heurity, in San Francisco, that he contracted smallpox. His brother, Mercer, brought him home to the parents, exposing the family and contributing to the death of his father Daniel Holder Ingram, mother Nancy Burgess Ingram, brother Washington Mercer Ingram, and his sister Lydia Ellen Ingram. They were buried on the family farm in Calistoga, CA. When the freeway went through Daniel Holder Ingram's Grandson, Alva Cass Ingram, was contacted about moving the graves. It was decided because the family died of smallpox, it would be safer just to leave them where they laid. So the graves are under Highway 12, near Calistoga, Napa County, California.
