It will be remembered by readers that a short time ago a young man named Ingraham [sic], living about two miles this side of Calistoga, died from the terrible disease, and it is supposed that through him the parties now down contracted it. A number of the Ingraham [sic] family are afflicted with the disease, and we believe a number of others. A telegram was received by the authorities in Napa Tuesday evening from Mr. J. A. Chesebro of Calistoga, asking that a female nurse be sent up at once to take care of two women now suffering with the complaint. A messenger was sent out to Mr. Robinson, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, and doubtless the nurse will be sent up as soon as one can be found.—Reporter -------------------- -------------------- Napa Reporter, January 7, 1881 Last Sunday three cases of small-pox were reported in the Ingram family, two miles below Calistoga, where the death mentioned last week occurred. On Monday another case was reported, making four cases in the family at the same time; but this morning Mrs. D. . Ingram, aged 65 years died, thus leaving three cases at present, viz: D.H. Ingram, his daughter Ella and his son Mercer. D.H. is 67 years old and will probably die, and we understand that little hopes are entertained for the recovery of the daughter; Mercer will very likely recover. These make five cases in the family thus far, and there will no doubt be as many more hereafter. -------------------- -------------------- St. Helena Star, November 3, 1944 Originally reported under the headline of St. Helena's Early Days From the Star Files, 1881 There was a bad epidemic of small pox in San Francisco, and an outbreak of the disease in the Ingraham [sic] family, two miles this side of Calistoga, at a place formerly called "Kayworth." The entire family of father, mother, daughter and two sons died, and were buried in the small cemetery at the side of the county road. --------------------
