Shelbina TORCHLIGHT ANDREW MCBROOM This old and respected citizen was born and raised in Smyth county, Virginia. In 1833 he, with his family, came to Missouri and settled on a tract of land on the southwest corner of which Bacon Chapel church stands. Mr. McBroom was a farmer, a member of Bacon Chapel, a good neighbor and a worthy citizen. He lived to a good old age and died many years ago. He left a worthy family of six boys and two girls. (Transcriber's note: It would appear that the letter writer meant to say six girls and two boys, based upon the following paragraphs.)... One of the daughters of Andrew McBroom married a Mr. Morgan Barton, who, being a southern man, was driven into the southern army for safety. After the Kirksville fight he came home, believing if he would take the ironclad oath, he would be permitted to remain at home with his family. But to his surprise, he was sent to Alton prison where he was kept till disease fastened its fangs upon him and destroyed his life. Mr. Barton's life was taken by his enemies by a slow but sure process. A second daughter married Mr. Daniel Barton. This gentleman was a southern man but remained at home until a company of militia came to his house and arrested him and marched him a short distance from home and murdered him. Not being satisfied with the spilling of the lifeblood of an innocent man, they burned his house also. A third daughter was the wife of Mr. James Barr and is one of the best women of Bacon Chapel Neighborhood. A fourth daughter is Mrs. Austin and lives in South Mo. A fifth daughter is Mrs. Benjamin Carroll, living near the old homestead. A sixth daughter is Mrs. Gurdane, living in Oregon. All of these women are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South and are devoted Christians and mothers of the best citizens of Shelby county. DIED Of cancer of his face, at the house of his son, P. G. McBroom, ANDREW McBROOM, in the eighty-sixth year of his age. The cancer, for three years, was slowly eating and spreading, until it destroyed his nose entirely. Some six weeks before his death he was confined to the house, and during the last ten days to his bedroom. From the time he ceased visiting among his children and grandchildren, he was tenderly and carefully waited upon day and night, by P. G. McBroom and wife, til his death on , at noon, on Tuesday, the 26th of April, 1870. He endured his affliction patiently - resignedly. He was a member of the M. E. Church, South, at Bacon Chapel, for several years and was a good neighbor, a kind father, a peaceful citizen, and left no enemies. Shelbina Democrat, Shelbina, Missouri. My name is Warren McBroom and my 5th great-grandparents where William and Rebecca (Chaffin) McBroom. I think we may have corresponded several years ago regarding whether the above-referenced Andrew was a son of William and Rebecca. At the time, I did not think that he was. However, I'm now entirely convinced that he is, in fact, a son of William and Rebecca. One key piece of evidence is that the family of his wife, Margaret HENIGER, were a well-established family in Burkes Garden, VA, where William and Rebecca resided (and where he, at one point, served as Constable) before they moved to Floyd Co., Kentucky. It appears that Andrew stayed behind with his wife and her family, rather than accompany his parents and other siblings to Kentucky circa 1811. Please note that there is even a Heninger Family Cemetery in Burkes Garden, VA; see https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2517752/heninger-family-cemetery. I also found Andrew in the 1830 census as a resident of Tazewell County, VA, in which Burkes Garden is located. Interestingly, his brother Joseph (my 4th great-grandfather) did something similar. After spending only a few years in Floyd Co., Kentucky, William and Rebecca and their children moved to Clark/Orange Counties, Indiana - except son Joseph, who remained in Floyd Co., KY for several more years, most likely because the family of his wife, Phoebe Young, were well-established in Floyd Co., KY. Joseph and Pheobe did not move to Indiana until the late 1820's, and, like his brother Andrew, did not settle in the same place as his other siblings.
