Peterson was born March 18, 1872 in Schleswig Holstein, Germany, one of a family of seven children, to parents, Lawrence and Ane Christine Nielsen Peterson. At the age of five he immigrated to America with his mother and five brothers and sisters. The family landed at New York city harbor on March 27, 1877, and came on West directly to the Rockfield community, of Clay county, Dakota Territory. Here he grew to manhood, working on various farms in that area, and also for a time on his mother's homestead in Turner county. He was united in marriage Sept. 28, 1899 to Annie Rasmussen in the Danish Lutheran church at Beresford. The couple then started farming in the Alsen area, which vocation he followed for over half a century, when he retired after 51 years of continuous farming operation, bought their home in Beresford, into which they moved Oct. 25, 1950. He enjoyed good health all his life until two years ago, when he was hospitalized for a couple of days. The stroke came without warning, and from which he never regained consciousness. His passing came peacefully in his own home late Friday afternoon, January 19, after having attained the age of 78 years, 10 months, and 1 day. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran church at Rockfield, in which he was confirmed. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, infancy, two brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Annie Peterson; one daughter Hazel (Mrs. Martin Klostergaard), two sons, Miner Peterson and Roy L. Peterson, all of Beresford and two brothers, Lawrence Peterson and Niels C. Nielson, both of Beresford. Memorial services were held from the Wass Chapel and St. Paul's Lutheran church in Rockfield Monday afternoon with Rev. E. L. Erlander in charge of the rites. Furnishing the music were Jules Welch and Mrs. And Mrs. Earl Eklund with Arlis Wilson and Mrs. Andrew Lawerensen, accompanists. Mrs. Orville Jensen and Mrs. Richard Jensen cared for the floral arrangements. Serving as ushers were Stanley Christensen and Paul Nelson. Charles Peterson, Albert Peterson, Alvin Peterson, Emery Simonson, Lester Simonson and Harold Madsen were casket bearers.
