This community was shocked last week by the double bereavement in the well known Laughlin family, when father and son were called within a few hours of each other. John Laughlin, one of the oldest and most respected citizens died at his home on Main street, Westernport, October 30, after a week's illness due to infirmities of old age. Mr. Laughlin was born in County Kerry, Ireland, March 20, 1826, and was in the 87th year of his age. He was married in England to Ellen Byrne about 58 years ago. His wife died October 21, 1907, after they had enjoyed a happy companionship of 53 years, her death being the first in her immediate family in half a century. Mr. Laughlin was a life long and devoted member of St. Peter's Parish, Westernport, for nearly 50 years. Mr. Laughlin left a large family to mourn his death consisting of eight sons and one daughter, namely: Daniel, James F., Andrew P., Joseph T., John W., Richard M., Charles T., Patrick A. and Miss Mary Laughlin. A number of the sons are well known business men of this community. Joseph T. Laughlin being the president of the Citizens National Bank of Westernport, and Patrick A. Laughlin being the cashier of the First National Bank of Barton, Md. ANDREW P. LAUGHLIN, the third son of John Laughlin, whose death is above recorded, died at his home in Westernport Thursday morning, October 31, about twelve hours after the death of his aged father. He was born in England August 19, 1862, and was in the 51st year of his age. He had been a sufferer for about two years, but had only been seriously ill for a few days, death being due to diabetes. His death came as a great shock to the two families, following so closely the death of his father. He was a well known and prominent business man and had been proprietor of the Laughlin House, Westernport, for the last twenty five years. His wife, who was Miss Catherine Donahue, died about twelve years ago, and he left to bereave his sad death besides the brothers and sister mentioned, a large family of six sons and one daughter, namely: John J., William, Edward, Andrew, Patrick, Richard and Stella. John J., the oldest son, is employed in the office of the James Clark Distilling Company, Cumberland, Md., and Edward is employed as a machinist in the U. S. Navy and at present is stationed at Annapolis, the other children being at home. The double funeral of father and son was a sad one indeed, and was held from St. Peter's Catholic church with a High Requiem mass at none o'clock Saturday morning, interment being in St. Peter's cemetery, Revs. Fathers Gallagher and Flood officiating. A large concourse of friends attended the funeral. The pallbearers were John O'Hanley, Patrick Carey, John McGuigan, Jacob W. Hughes, P. F. White, Miles Byrne, Frank O'Laughlin, C. E. Howard, William Fazenbaker and Patrick A. Tierney."
