Though he had been gradually failing since last September, and death had been expected several days, yet much sorrow is felt over his demise. Andrew W. Riggs was the son of Star B. and Elmira Short Riggs, and he was born in Derby, Connecticut, on June 5th, 1826. His parents moved to Ohio when the son was very young, thence they moved to Indiana. Mr. Riggs was married to Martha A. Spelman Feb. 7th 1850, and to this union were born eight children, four of whom survive him. Mrs. Riggs died February 5th, 1869, leaving the husband and six children, the oldest a girl of seventeen and the youngest a son but a little more than a year. On October 15th, 1872, he again married, his second wife being Miss E. Celma Armstrong who has been a faithful loving wife. She, together with the following children of the first union, survives: Eva, wife of A. Baker, of Oskaloosa; Cora, wife of J.H. Meredith of O'Neill, Nebraska; James H., publisher of the Gazette at Waterloo, Nebraska; and George D., foreman of the composing room of the Register and Leader at Des Moines. Four children precede him in death. Nellie and Herbert died in infancy before the family came to this place. Ernest met with injuries in the mill here some years ago from which he died a few weeks later. Isaac, the last to die, passed away suddenly on February 15, 1903. Mr. Riggs came to Henry Co., Iowa in 1845 and to Eddyville on June 29th 18--. By profession he was a miller, although he was engaged in the mercantile business at Mt. Pleasant for a time. About 1857 he and his brother-in-law, T.C. Spelman and two other partners engaged in milling at Oakland Mills. Mr. Riggs and Mr. Spelman purchased a mill at Glasco in 1864, and the following year they moved the machinery to Eddyville. This firm continued as Riggs & Spelman up till 1880 when Mr. Spelman sold his interest to Mr. Riggs and moved to Kansas. Mr. Riggs conducted the mill alone till April 1892, when his son Ernest, who had been living at Cleveland, Ohio, returned to Eddyville and entered the business with his father. They continued as partners till the son met his death by and accident in the mill some years later. Except for one year when he leased the mill to other parties, Mr. Riggs conducted it alone up till his last illness. Since last autumn it has been leased by L.V. Terrell. Mr. Riggs is survived by one brother, Frederic Riggs of Indian Territory. The late A.S. Riggs who was for years a resident of this place, but who moved to the west some years ago, was a brother of the deceased. He passed away at his home at the corner of North Fifth and Elm Streets, at 4:30 o'clock P.M., Easter Sunday, April 15, 1906, having attained the age of 79 years, 10 months, and 10 days. The services were conducted at the Congregational Church by the pastor Rev. O.W. Hempstead, assisted by Rev. Kight, at 2:30 o'clock, Tuesday afternoon. John Wilcox Post G.A.R., had charge of the services at the grave. Burial was made in Highland Cemetery. (Obituary continues on with more glowing tributes.)
