To summarize briefly, Ernest Riggs was severely injured at the familys mill, when he apparently slipped and fell across a belt and went into the flywheel feet, face downward. He was then carried over the wheel crushed between it and the belt. The distance between the flywheel and the ground through which his body passed was only about two inches. His most severe injuries were described in great detail but it would seem his internal organs were badly crushed, his spine injured and severe head injuries. ---------------------- Obituary The obituary of Ernest S. Riggs appears in the Eddyville Tribune, Friday, November 24, 1899, on page 1. Again it is unfortunate that the filmed copy of this particular paper cuts off the left side of this article, making the first column hard to read. Riggs at his home on --- street, November 19, 1899; [34] years, 2 months, and 11 days. Ernest was born in Eddyville [August 28,] 1865, and remained here until he went to Cleveland, Ohio. [December 22], 1890 he was united in marriage to Miss Lena Wagner, of that city. To this union four children were born, [three] boys and one girl, all of [and] his wife survive him. With --- returned here in 1892, going into the milling business with his father, A.W. Riggs. He was a member of the Christian church, the Knights of [the Pythias and] the Modern Woodman of [America]. He served three years on the ---. His death was due to an accidental --- in the mill, the full descriptions of which were published in the last TRIBUNE. At that time great --- entertained of his recovery, --- symptoms of spinal trouble ---, which caused him to become restless and made the treatment of his internal injuries very --- . The internal hemorrhages, --- to have been almost under --- and the gravest alarm ---- his condition. There was Saturday night at about --- , at which time all hopes of recovery were abandoned, and he --- until 6:15 oclock, at which time he died. The funeral services were held Tuesday p.m. at 2 oclock from the Congregational church, under the auspices of the M.W.A. and K. of P. lodges; Rev. A.L. Criley delivering the address. An immense concourse of friends followed the remains to Highland cemetery where they were laid to rest. [The news article continues on for another column with glowing words about Ernest S. Riggs.
