Angeline "Ann" Doris Oldenburger, age 85, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of Seede and Jesse (Hook) Mennen on September 23, 1923, rural Grundy County, Aplington, Iowa. She received her education from a rural country school near her home. Following school Ann worked at the Corner Café in Aplington and at Rath Packing Plant in Waterloo, Iowa. On December 20, 1945, Angeline was united in marriage with William L. Oldenburger at her parent's home in Aplington. The couple made their home in Aplington for a couple of years until they moved out to the farm south of Aplington, where she was a loving farm wife and mother of four. In 1972 they retired from farming and moved to Aplington. Through the years she also worked at the Aplington Sale Barn Café and the Lunch Box. One of her favorite jobs was working at the Peppercorn Pantry in Aplington. Ann was an active member of the First Reformed Church in Aplington where she taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years, was a member of the Ladies Guild and Willing Workers. She enjoyed cooking and baking, but her real passion was being with people and spending time with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ann loved to travel with Bill which included going to Hawaii, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Africa and Canada and taking bus trips later in life. Ann died Wednesday, April 29, 2009, of natural causes at her home in Aplington surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sonja Gerdes on September 5, 2004, a granddaughter, Britni Ann Oldenburger, her parents, one sister, Colleen Storbeck, and three brothers, Roy, Lester and Jesse Mennen. Ann is survived by her husband, William Oldenburger of Aplington, IA; two sons, Neale (Verlene) Oldenburger of Aplington, IA and Noel (Brenda) Oldenburger of Parkersburg, IA; one daughter, Shelley (David) Titone of Providence, RI; eight grandchildren, Aaron (Tami) Oldenburger, Amy Whitfield, Shalee (Dan) Torrence, Molly Oldenburger, Sean Gerdes, Matt (Elke) Gerdes, Stephanie (Jon) Hietbrink and Johnathon Titone; eleven great grandchildren; one sister, Viola Brocka of Cedar Falls, IA; one brother-in-law, Marvin Storbeck of Auburn, AL; and three sisters-in-law, Ruth Mennen of Cedar Falls, IA, Jeanette Mennen of Ackley, IA and Helen Alberts of Allison, IA. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009, at the First Reformed Church with burial at the Pleasant View Cemetery both Aplington. Visitation will be Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington, (319)347-6275. Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Valley Hospice. Read less
