Description	:	Lester Mennen, age 86, of Ackley, formerly of Parkersburg, was born April 26, 1922, the son of Seede and Jessie Hook Mennen in Grundy County, Iowa. He received his education in a country school near his home. He served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946 where he was a gunner in the Pacific. Read More	Lester Mennen, age 86, of Ackley, formerly of Parkersburg, was born April 26, 1922, the son of Seede and Jessie Hook Mennen in Grundy County, Iowa. He received his education in a country school near his home. He served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946 where he was a gunner in the Pacific. Lester attended Mason City School of Auctioneering after his service. Lester was united in marriage with Jeanette Fuls on February 1, 1943, in Kesley, Iowa. Lester has lived in Butler County or Grundy County all his life. He began farming with his father and later owned and operated the elevator and grocery store in Kesley. He and Jeanette moved to Buck Grove in March, 1956, where they farmed for nine years. He then bought the livestock buying station south of Buck Grove and ran it for nine years. In 1975 he bought the Ackley Sales Barn and ran that, until he sold it in the late 1980's. Lester also sold real estate for Schuck Realty and also worked as an auctioneer. Lester was a 50-year member of the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington where he served as a trustee and Sunday School Superintendent. He was an active member of the Kesley AMVETS, the Democratic Party and Pheasants Forever. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He loved his family and had fun teasing the grandchildren. Lester died Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley, Iowa of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his father, Seede Mennen; his mother, Jessie Hook Mennen; a step-mother, Tina Muller Mennen; two brothers, Roy Mennen and Jesse Mennen; and one sister, Colleen Storbeck. Lester is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jeanette Mennen, Ackley, Iowa; two sons, Ronald (Claudette) Mennen, Austin, Texas and Terry (Janet) Mennen, Parkersburg, Iowa; two daughters, Karen (Bruce) Henriksen, Cedar Falls, Iowa and Colette (Robert) Stubbe, Ackley, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Ramona (Brian) Mitchell, Kevin Henriksen, Josh (LaRae) Mennen, Randy (Karen) Mennen, Jeffrey (Kelli) Mennen , Jessica (Andy) Pollock, and Alison (Scott) Kelly; eight great-grandchildren, Alex and Beth Mitchell, Ashlee and Raela Mennen, Brett and Amber Mennen, Addison and Elisa Pollock; two step-grandchildren, Jeff (Stacy) Stubbe and Christine (Andy) Hoffman; three step-great-grandchildren, Liam Stubbe, Carter Stubbe and Cade Hoffman; two sisters, Viola Brocka, Cedar Falls, Iowa and Ann (Bill) Oldenburger, Aplington, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Marvin Storbeck, Auburn, Alabama; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Mennen, Cedar Falls, Iowa. Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, at the First Presbyterian Church with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery, both in Aplington. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington
