Read More	Published in The Star Democrat on July 10, 2018 Ann Claudette (Stevens) Butler of Chester, MD passed away on July 8, 2018 peacefully at her home. She was 82. Ann was born on Kent Island in Dominion on March 5, 1936. She was the daughter of the late Captain Ira Stevens and Lottie Mary (Clough) Stevens of Dominion, Chester, MD. Growing up in Dominion, Ann was also known by her nickname "Dolly". Ann enjoyed her summers sailing with her father and the family on two of the schooners her father captained. One was called the Ruth Decker, and the other was called the Edwin and Maud, which is still actively sailing in Maine as "Victory Chimes," and is a US National Historic Landmark, shown on the Maine State Quarter. Ann graduated Stevensville High School in 1954. After graduation, she worked at the restaurant, Tour Inns, on Kent Island then worked at the State Comptroller's Office in the Income Tax Department in Annapolis, Maryland. She also sang with the Maryland State Employees Choir. Ann enjoyed playing the organ and had a beautiful singing voice. She even sang "I Believe," at the Delmarva Chicken Festival Talent Contest in the late 1950's. In October 1960 she married Floyd S. Butler, Jr. at the Dominion Methodist Church in Chester, MD. They were married for 57 years. At the Dominion Methodist Church, Ann was involved in the choir, played the organ and helped as their record keeper. The Dominion Methodist Church later combined to become the Kent Island United Methodist Church. At the Kent Island United Methodist Church, Ann and her husband both volunteered as the treasurers and the attendance record keepers for the Sunday School for over 35 years. Ann and her husband had their home built in Harborview, Chester, MD and that's where they raised their family and lived their whole life. Ann retired from the State Comptroller's Office to become a homemaker and raise their three children. Ann was a loving daughter who brought her mother, who suffered from Alzheimers, into their home and cared for her until her death. Ann also worked in the cafeteria at Grasonville Elementary School and Stevensville Middle School but later decided to leave to help raise her grandchildren. Ann was a wonderful homemaker who enjoyed cooking, crocheting, sewing and braiding wool rugs. Ann attended local craft shows where she would sell her skillfully-made braided wool rugs and other hand made items. Over the years she loved spending time with family and friends at the beach, on their boat, camping and watching her children and grandchildren grow up. Ann will always be remembered for her kindness and generosity to others, her love of making things for family and friends, her sense of humor and her love for her family. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Butler is survived by her beloved husband, Floyd S. Butler, Jr.; two daughters, Betsy Quathamer, (Rob) of Easton, MD and Shelly Martin, (Rich) of Stevensville, MD; a son Floyd S. Butler, III (Stephanie) of Chester, MD, six grandchildren Brian Bowman, Randy Timms, Jr., Alexis Martin, Ashley Martin, Brittney Butler and Floyd Butler IV and her nieces and nephews Johnny Webster (Wren), Mary Ann Coursey, Steve Stevens and Shirley Walters. Mrs. Butler was predeceased by two brothers Milford Stevens and William Stevens and a sister Maude Webster. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Kent Island United Methodist Church, Compass Regional Hospice, or the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at 12 pm at the Fellows Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD, where family and friends may visit from 11 am to 12 pm. Interment will follow in Kingsley Cemetery in Chester, MD.
