Rev. A.E. Coe, pastor of the M.E. church at Greene, assisted by Rev. W.N. Roush, was in charge. The M.E. mixed quartet from Greene, sang selected hymns. A capacity house, relatives and friends, many from a distance, were present to pay a parting tribute to the one we had known and loved for her many good qualities. There was a profusion of beautiful flowers, contributed by loving friends, which were arranged by former school friends, Misses Zola and Jennie Early and Helen Rose. Cline Sniffin, Henry and Clayton Folkerts, Lawrence Jepsen, Beryl Needham, and Steven Piper bore her to her last resting place in Oak Hill, where interment was in a vault, by an infant son, who preceded her in death, November 5. Ann Jane Stewart, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Stewart, was born in Bristow, Iowa, May 28, 1901. From early youth she attended Bristow school and was awarded a diploma on her seventeenth birthday, the youngest pupil in the class of 1918. She was a member of the M. E. church, transferring her membership to Hampton, where she was at home for a year. Ann Jane was a general favorite. The personnel of her friendship were those who knew her. She was resourceful, patient, obliging, courteous, and kind. On Easter Day, 1922, romance ended and history began, when she and Clarence Starkweather of Greene were wed at the M. E. parsonage at Dumont, Rev. H. H. Barton officiating. Later they established a home at Greene. Death was due to complications superinduced by a fall, which baffled the skill of physicians and nurse, and the young life went out, leaving the home and loved ones desolate indeed. She died in the triumph of a living faith, leaving the testimony, that Jesus was with her in the valley and shadow, casting out fear. Is it then so sad a thing to die, when faith builds a bridge across the gulf of death? She is survived by her devoted husband, father, mother; brothers, Robert, Charles, and George; sisters, Nellie Hemmingson, of Allison, and Carrie Merfeld of Greene. Another sister, Elizabeth, died in 1907. The body was brought back here from Greene to her girlhood home, on Saturday and many sympathetic tears were shed. We understand death for the first time when he puts his hand on one we love. But death has left her only the beautiful.
