Jan 9 1930 - Emmetsburg Reporter - Mrs. John McCoy, another of Palo Alto county's pioneers, died last Friday at her home in this city. Funeral services were held in the Assumption church Monday morning. The pall bearers were 6 grandsons: Joe O'Brien, Howard Steil, William Steil, Joe McDonald, William McCoy and Leo McDonald. Burial was made in St. John's cemetery. The deceased was born in Killarney, Ireland, February 2, 1842. Thus she was almost 88 years of age at the time of death. She came to America at the age of 15, first living in New York. She was married to John McCoy January 15, 1862, in Long Island, and shortly thereafter they came west and settled at Fort Dodge. In the year 1867 they moved to Great Oak township, Palo Alto county, and took a homestead. The husband died 33 years ago, In 1900 Mrs. McCoy moved to the city of Emmetsburg and had since resided here. Nine children were born, eight of whom, are living. They are Mrs Peter O'Brien, Mrs. John Steil, John McCoy, Anna McCoy, James McCoy, Mrs. J.J. McDonald, Charles, and Catherine McCoy. Whenever a pioneer, such as the life of whom we are writing, passes into the next world, it awakens something akin to awe as one contemplates the strength of character of the departed one. It took strong traits of physical and moral courage to brave the uncertainities and to endure the hardships of the early days in our county. And for one to bravely accept the pioneer life, survive its trials, and live on into the borrowed time of 88 years, is a remarkable accomplishment. She highly deserved the term we have frequently heard applied to her "A sweet old lady."
