ANNA HESS, PIONEER WOMAN, DIES HERE AT 82 Mrs. Anna Hess, 82, a resident of this community nearly sixty years died Thursday evening of last week at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Fannie Blocker, where she had been cared for and had been continuously bedfast for the last six months. She was a victim of heart disease and complications. Mrs. Hess has been failing gradually, and her death had been expected for several weeks. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at Mrs. Blocker’s home and at 10 o’clock at Immaculate Conception church. Burial in St. Vaclav cemetery, west of town, was delayed because of the raging blizzard. In the afternoon a party of about twenty persons made the trip in sleds, reaching the cemetery with some difficulty after shoveling snow a small part of the way. The Rev. Father Vopatek, of Clutier, conducted the funeral. Pall bearers were Fred Linhart, Joe Chalupnik, John Mareda, Frank Stary, Joe Kriz and Ben Balvin. Mrs. Hess, whose maiden name was Anna Kalina, was born in Europe July 26, 1853. She was married there to Vaclav Hess when she was about 20 years old. Following the birth of their first child, Anton, the couple came to America where Mr. Hess worked for a time in a stone quarry near LeGrand, Marshall county. Then they moved to a farm in Carroll township, making this community their home throughout the remainder of their lives. About fifteen years ago the couple retired from the farm and moved to town. Mr. Hess died suddenly here as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage in July 1929. They were the parents of eleven children of whom three died in infancy. One daughter, Mrs. John Schmidt, died about ten years ago. The remaining three sons and four daughters all are living. Besides Mrs. Blocker, they are Anton Hess, Joe Hess, all of the Clutier community; Mrs. Frank Weaver and Mrs. Tena Dudek, both of Belle Plaine; and Mrs. Louis Linhart, near Clutier. Twenty-two grandchildren and five great grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Hess was a former member of the Rosary society. She was a kind woman of good character who was held in high esteem among her relatives and friends.
