Description	:	Anna (Kalina) and James Hess. James Hess was born in Bohemia, September 28, 1851, son of Frank and Josephine Hess. He came to America about 1876, coming by way of the Atlantic to the St. Lawrence River to Cleveland, Ohio. From Cleveland, Ohio he traveled by land to Chicago where he resided in the Berwyn-Cicero area for a short time. He came to America about 1876, coming by way of the Atlantic to the St. Lawrence River to Cleveland, Ohio. From Cleveland, Ohio he traveled by land to Chicago where he resided in the Berwyn-Cicero area for a short time. He then set out for Iowa, first settling near Quarry in Marshall County and later moving to Carroll Township in Tama County. James married Anna Kalina in Bohemia. She was born July 26, 1853, the daughter of John and Barbara (Cerny) Kalina. Anna and their infant son, Anton, came to America several months after her husband arrived. James and Anna came from the County of Pisek, south of Prague. Anna had one sister and two brothers who also came to America. Her sister, Mary 1845-1926 married Frank Tupa and had seven children. The eldest, brother, Matej/Matthew Kalina 1841-1918 married first, Mary Malek and second, Katerina Krbec. He had six children, one by the first marriage and five by the second marriage. Mary Tupa and Matthew Kalina resided with their families in the Fayette County, Texas area. The other brother, Frank Kalina, born in 1842 settled in the Allegheny County, Pennsylvania area where he was a miner. In several early Catholic Church records from the Holy Trinity Church in Otter Creek Township, pertaining to this Hess family, the surname was spelled "Hessoum." Family members recall the fact that James Hessoum changed his surname to "Hess" to Americanize his name. Many early documents list his first name as "Vaclav" as that is the Bohemian version of James. On September 14, 1887, James Hess purchased 40 acres located in the SE 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Section 13 in Carroll Township from Michael and Anna Krezek for $1000. On December 11, 1895, James purchased 80 acres located in the W 1/2 of the NW 1/4 of Section 13 adjoining his earlier 40 acre purchase. This 80 acres was purchased from John and Barbara Skrable for $2000. James agreed to assume the Skrable's mortgage to Anna Hoorsch for $1000 at 7 interest on this 80 acres of land. James and Anna were farmers and resided on this 120 acres until about 1920 when they retired and moved to Clutier. Their son, John, resided on this farm for several years after his parents retired. James died July 15, 1929 and Anna died February 6, 1936. Both are buried at the St. Wencelaus Catholic Cemetery west of Clutier. Family members recall that "Grandma Hess" died during the week of the terrible snowstorm of 1936. Her funeral was held at the Immaculate Conception Church in Clutier but the burial had to be postponed. When it was decided to proceed with the burial, 20 persons with four bobsleds accompanied her remains to the cemetery. They traveled over high snow drifts and after considerable snow shoveling arrived at the cemetery. James and Anna were the parents of eleven children, three died as infants.
