Description	:	Anna Arp was the fifth of eight children born to Heinrich Henry Arp and Bertha A Schoel at a village named Rosendorf, near Kiel, Germany. Family story says she emigrated to the United States in 1887 at age 12 with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Wendorf. Anna's older siblings had already emigrated to the U.S. and she wanted to go too. Her obituary claims she came with a brother to Davenport, Iowa. Her mother cried when she left Germany as she feared they would never see Anna again. The Wendorfs settled at Dysart, Iowa, and her uncle opened an inn & livery stable. Her aunt ran the saloon and Anna was expected to help at both places. She would rub down the horses and feed them and she said she loved to do this. But when finished, she was expected to wait on customers in the bar. She disliked this work very much. She did finish 8th grade and learned to speak and write English. In 1893, six years after Anna had left Germany, her parents came to the U.S. What a happy reunion!! Her parents rented a farm near Dysart, Iowa and she was able to live with them again. Found in the 1895 census at Tama, Iowa: Anna Arp, age 19. Annie and August Jurgen Ketelsen met and married on March 10th, 1898 at Clutier, Tama, Iowa. Mr and Mrs Fred Witt were their witnesses and they were married by Vincent Kosnar, Justice of Peace. They had five children: Henry Jurgen, Wilma Bertha, Maria Anna, Elmer August and Lorraine Dorothy. Found in the 1900 census at Perry, Tama, Iowa: August Ketelsen 28, Anna 24, Henry 1 and Wilma 3 months. Says she emigrated 1887. Found in the 1910 census at Oneida, Tama, Iowa: August Ketelesen 38, Annie 34, Henry 11, Wilma 10, Mary 7, Elmer 6 months, Charlie Hansen 28, hired man. In the spring of 1911, August and Annie packed up their belongings and moved north by train, buying a farm in Burr Oak Township, Mitchell, County, Iowa, just east of Annie's brother, Julius Arp's farm. The youngest daughter, Lorraine, was born here. Anna was a hard worker. It was nothing unusual for her to tackle a job in the morning and finish it that day. She might decide to clean the grove, wash windows, can garden vegetables, butcher chickens, hogs. Whatever the task, it got done fast! She sewed, crocheted and was active in her Lutheran faith. She learned English and was naturalized. Found in the 1915 - 1930 censuses at Burr Oak, Mitchell, Iowa: 1915: Anna M Ketelsen age 40. 1920: August J Ketelsen 47, Annie 44, Henry 20, Wilma 19, Mary 17, Elmer 10, Lorraine 2 yrs. 9 mos. 1925: August Ketelson 52, Annie 49, Hanry 26, Alma 15, Lorraine 7, Ellen 20, Fern 17. 1930: August Kettelson 58, Anna 55, Lorraine 12, Elmer 21, Gladys 22. After son, Elmer, and Gladys (Olsen) were married, August and Annie moved to live in Osage, Mitchell County, Iowa. Annie worked for a few years at a business in Osage. Found in the 1940 census at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa: August J Kittelsen 68, Anna Marie 64. ************ Obituary: Mason City Globe Gazette, Tuesday, February 28, 1961: MRS. A. KETELSON SERVICES THURSDAY AT OSAGE CHURCH (Surname mis-spelled) Osage: Funeral services for Mrs. August Ketelson, 85, will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church. A prayer service will be held at the Champion Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery. Mrs. Ketelson died Monday at the Mitchell County Memorial Hospital. Born June 6, 1875, in Germany, she came to Davenport with a brother when she was 12. She was married March 10, 1898, and the couple farmed near Osage from 1910 to 1930. Her husband died last year. Surviving are two sons, Henry, Little Cedar; Elmer, Osage, three daughters, Mrs. Wilma Snyder, Osage; Mrs. Louis (Mary) Peterman, Juneau, Wis., Mrs. Avery (Lorraine) Brush, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; 21 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, a sister Mrs. Della Witt and a brother, Herman, both of Gladbrook.
