They had 8 children who were all born there: Julius Edward, Johannes Theodore, Wilhelmina Katherine, William Henry Jurgen, Anna Marie, Adelia Helen, Emma Margaretha and Herman Henry. Heinrick Arp was responsible for planting roses to beautify the village of Steine. His passion was gardening, both flower and vegetable and he tended to large gardens, even when older. Some of Henry's relatives and a few of his children left Germany to emigrate to Iowa before Henry and Bertha and their younger children had saved enough money to also emigrate. Ship record found for Henry, Bertha, Adele, Emma, Herman, Wilhelm Arp. Left Hamburg, German September 24, 1893, on ship "Russia", Captain Schmidt. Family had resided at Brudersdorf, Holstein, Germany. Henry's Occuption: Landmann,; Accomodations: steerage. Arrived in New York October 13, 1893. Arrival record at New York City says he was a laborer from Brudersdorf. Herman Arp recalls the trip to America in his biography: " It took us 14 days to make the crossing over the Atlantic Ocean, as we ran into a bad storm that lasted 7 days. The storm kicked up waves 100 feet high or more, and everything that wasn't fastened securely, got washed overboard, including our appetites. Everybody was seasick except the crew. It was impossible to eat at a table. We had to hold onto everything with both hands and we had to drink out of a bottle, as you'd spill it all if you tried to drink out of a cup. The worst lasted for 3 days and nights, then it slacked up some, but it was still plenty rough, but the second week the sea was as smooth as a mill pond and we enjoyed all kinds of games and dances on deck. After we landed in New York, we were put on Ellis Island, right next to where the Statue of Liberty stands, since we had been exposed to cholera in Hamberg, Germany, the seaport from which we had set sail. This was a sort of quarantine. But we really enjoyed our stay there, as everyone was really nice to us and we enjoyed the scenery. The New York Skyline was especially beautiful at night. We could see big ocean liners and the other ships come and go with all their lights on. Then we had to go thru customs, which was just a formality, and then we were put on a train bound for Dysart, Iowa. (Remember, they all spoke only German.) That took over 3 days, we had a layover in Chicago, and then the train took us past Dysart and clear to Reinbeck before they discovered we had forgotten to get off at Dysart. So we had to wait in Reinbeck till the next train came along and took us back to Dysart. GLORY BE!! There was my mother's sister waiting for us at the depot. She looked like an angel to us as she could speak our language. She took us to a hotel and we got the best meal we had had for a long time. Then she took us in a lumber wagon out to her home to rest, and to get acquainted with friends we had known in the old country. We had to learn the American way of doing things. There was a farm rented for us, and since no one was living in the house, we could move right in. We got possession of the land the next spring. Our nearest town at that time was Dysart, Iowa, which was 12 miles but they were building a branch of the C.N.Western up to Albert Lee, Minnesota, that would pass within less than a mile from our place and the town of Clutier was started there." His granddaughter, Wilma, recalled how fussy he was about his gardens. He told the grandchildren to "stay on the paths". Obituary: Henrich "Henry" Arp 1845-1926 Henrich Arp was born in a little village near Kiel, Rosendorf, Schleswig -Holstein, Germany, in the year of 1845, on January 31st. He died from pneumonia.at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Adelia Witt, 4 miles NW of Gladbrook, Iowa on November 16th, at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 16 days. Henry was married to Bertha Schoel in 1864 at Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Henry, wife Bertha and some of their children came to America in the year of 1893, meeting relatives and their children who had already emigrated before them. They made their home near Dysart until his wife, Bertha Arp, preceded him in death in the year 1904. From that time on, he made his home with his children until 1915, then he stayed continually at the home of his daughter, Adelia Witt, near Gladbrook, Iowa. He passed away on November 16, 1926. He leaves to mourn: 4 sons: Julius, Johannes, William and Herman; 4 daughters: Wilhelmina, Anna, Adelia and Emma; 33 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. The funeral services were held at the F. L. Witt home Friday morning at 11 o'clock. followed by interment in Oneida township Cemetary. The pall bearers were: F. L. Witt, William Arp, Herman Arp, Julius Arp, August Ketelsen, and Hans Klinker. **************** Family found in the 1895 & 1900 censuses living at Oneida, Tama, Iowa: 1895: Henry Arp age 49. 1900: Henry Arp 55, Bertha 57, John 32, William 27, Emma 18. Found in the 1905 census at Oneida, Tama, Iowa. Found In the 1915 & 1920 censuses at Lincoln, Tama, Iowa: 1915: Henry Arp age 70. Says he is not naturalized, of Lutheran faith and widowed. 1920: Gus Goos 26, Georgiana Goos 22, Henry Arp 74, Evan Goos 3 yrs 3 mos , Freddie Goos 1 yr 4 mos , Irvin Goos 4 mos.
