Description	:	N. P. Westergard, for nearly forty-five years a prominent resident of this community, passed away suddenly at his home in this city at 11:30 Wednesday morning. Mr. Westergard suffered a slight stroke about two years ago, but apparently recovered. He had been indisposed only a few days preceding his death and was up town as recently as Saturday. Mr. Westergard suffered a slight stroke about two years ago, but apparently recovered. He had been indisposed only a few days preceding his death and was up town as recently as Saturday. Tuesday he experienced some difficulty in breathing and was placed under the care of a physician, although his condition did not appear to be alarming. He was up and dressed for awhile Wednesday morning, later slept for nearly an hour, but upon awakening there was a noticeable change and physicians were again summoned but he passed away shortly after they reached his home. Requiem high mass will be said at 10 o'clock Saturday morning at St. Mary's church in this city, after which the remains will be laid to rest in Mt Calvary cemetery beside two sons, who died in infancy. Nick Westergard was born in Denmark Aug. 28, 1861, and died at his home in Hawarden Nov. 19, 1930, at the age of 69 years, 2 months and 21 days. At the age of 22 he came to America and located first at Remsen. Later he was employed on the Dave Hammond farm in Reading township, Sioux county, for a year or two and following that made his home for a short time in Ireton. On Nov. 23,1886, he was united in marriage with Annie Potthoff of Hospers, Iowa. The first twelve years of their married life were spent on the W. W. Hall farm, four miles southeast of Hawarden, after which they moved onto their own farm, six miles south of Hawarden, where they lived until a year ago last month when they purchased a home in Hawarden and have since resided in this city. Besides his widow, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Dan Ronan, who resides on the home farm, south of Hawarden; Mrs. Mike Puhl of Akron; and Mrs. Nic Ruppert of Currie, Minn., and one adopted son, William Westergard, who resides in LeMars. He also leaves one brother, Jesse Westergard, who resides south of Hawarden, twenty-four grandchildren and one great grandson, besides numberless friends. The death of Nick Westergard removes from this community a man who was ever held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. A true husband and father, an obliging neighbor and a dependable friend, his sudden death came as a distinct shock alike to his family and acquaintances. Due to his long residence and the active life which he led in this community he possessed a wide acquaintance. Always he appeared in good spirits and he fairly radiated good cheer toward everyone he met. He was dependable and honorable in every relation in life and his home was one in which true hospitality was ever apparent. For about twenty years he served on the board of trustees of Logan township and also many years as school director in his district. He enjoyed the confidence of his friends and acquaintances to an unusual extent and his passing will be mourned by many outside the family circle.
