On that day one of the greatest of tragedies occured. The passenger steamer City of Chester, which plied regularly between Eureka and San Francisco, and left her berth in the latter city on one of her semi-weekly voyages to Eureka. She had her usual passenger and freight quota aboard. The fog had settled quickly after the City of Chester left her wharf but this was not unusual. Captain Wallace headed his ship toward the Golden Gate and was moving at a fair speed. At a point between the Presidio and Fort Point, the big transpacific steamer Oceanic, Inward boound, ploughed into her and in ten minutes the City of Chester sunk. Quick action on the part of Captain Wallace and his crew resulted in many of the passengers being saved, but the loss of life was 12. The Oceanic struck the City of Chester head-on. She continued to move forward and held the stricken vessel afloat longer than would have occurred had she backed away. The news of the terrible tragedy was recieved in Eureka when a telegram from the late J. J. Loggie formerly owner of the McKay & Company sawmill here, wired to W. L Heney of Eureka, informed him that his mother, was one of the passengers that had been lost. Most of the rescued passengers were taken aboard the Oceanic and returned to the San Francisco docks. The City of Chester was an iron vessel flying the flag of the old Pacific Coast Steamship Company." ______________________________________ From The Titanic Commutator, Volume 29, Number 169, 2005, pg 27: "J. Loggie was on deck when the collision occurred and Mrs. Heney was standing next to him. They could not get onto Oceanic in time. They sank with the Chester anlong with most of her passengers and crew who were carried down with her. They were anmong the lucky who floated to the surface after the vessel disappeared, many of them had life preservers. Struggling in the water, Mr. Loggie stayed with Mrs. Heney trying to keep her afloat until they were picked up. She was extremely frightened and was swallowing water when a wave washed over her face. She panicked and grabbed Loggie's neck with both hands nearly choking hiim to death. He was forced to uncleanch her grip around his trhroat and had to struggle to push her away. The frightened woman immediately sank but Loggie was picked up and his life was saved." ____________________________________ Excerpt from compilation by Amy Taubman Obenland, October 1978: "... Our great-grandmother, Mrs. C. H. Heney (couldn't find her first name anywhere) came to Eureka in 1857 after having lived in San Francisco, where our Grandpa Will Heney was born. All I know about her was what I read in Grandma (Xenia) diary written in the year 1879. She referred to her as a very likable person. The Heney's were very social and did a lot of entertaining, including many teas and parties. Grandma spent much time visiting the Heney family before she was married and helped great-grandmother with her entertaining. My mother told me she remembered her as being very "proper" and always well grommed at all times. Many of the beautiful antiques, dishers, pictures, etdc. in our fcamily belonged to her. Her death was an untimely one. She had been on a shopping trip to San Francisco, visiting Captain McKenzie and wife. She was on her way home aboard the ship Chester on August 23, 1888, when it was hit by the ship Oceanic in the bay. (there was a dense fog) They were near Alcatraz when this happened. Seems like the crew saved themselves and left the passengers to shift for themselves. Great-grandma and a friend S. S. Loggie from Eureka were the last ha x two people left on aboard. They jumped into the water holding onto each other. But then there was an explosion, and the Chester sank. Mr. Loggie said when life preserver was torned from him he swam for it and then swam to a life boat but Great-grandma was no where to be seen. Her body was picked up near Blossom rock by Captain Jergensen of the Tiger and brought to the Clay St. wharf. ..."
