Description	:	Charles H. Heney went to California with his family in 1849 during the gold excitement, traveling the customary route by way of the Isthmus of Panama. Arriving in this state, he worked in the mines for a short time with his brother, George K., who was located in Placerville. He afterward returned to San Francisco, and in 1855 located in Humboldt County, returning the following year for his family. Heney went to California with his family in 1849 during the gold excitement, traveling the customary route by way of the Isthmus of Panama. Arriving in this state, he worked in the mines for a short time with his brother, George K., who was located in Placerville. He afterward returned to San Francisco, and in 1855 located in Humboldt County, returning the following year for his family. They located permanently in Eureka, where Mr. Heney became a useful and progressive citizen. His first employment was in William Carson's sawmill, and he afterwards engaged in general merchandising. He was subsequently appointed postmaster of Eureka, and filled that office in a most capable manner for a period of nine years, being an incumbent of the office at the time of Lincoln's assassination. In 1876 he sold his store and bought the Southport ranch on Table Bluff, and there built a tramway from his landing to Eel River, a distance of three and a half miles. After operating it for two seasons, he sold it to the Pacific Lumber Co. Subsequently he built the Newburgh sawmill, located near Fortuna, in connection with E. J. Dodge and others and there engaged in the lumber business until his death. He was a Republican in politics, using both his influence and his vote to advance the cause of his chosen party. He owned the ranch of 165 acres in Table Bluff township which is nor the residence of his son. H. Heney of Table Bluff build a railroad from his landing (Southport) on the southern of of Humboldt Bay, around the point of Table Bluff to McNulty Slough on Eel River. The warehouse at Southport was on the bank of Heney Channel which was deep enough to accommodate any vessel that navigated Huboldt Bay. A trestle was built from the warehouse out to the channel. By the operation of warehouse and railroad, Mr. Heney expected to receive a large volume of the freight consigned to and from the Eel River Valley. The railroad was about five miles long and had wooden rails instead of iron ones. After trying many types of wood, Heney found that pepperwood made the best rails. It as a wood that could stand the rough usage of the car wheels and the heavy laods as it would neither split nor sliver. A large supply of extra rails were kept on hand to replace any that might be broken or worn out. The power for this railroad was a pair of mules. This team did not pull side by side, but one in front of the other. The center of the track was planked for the mules to walk. Their shoes had spikes in them so they wouldn't slip even when the planks were wet. To Heney, Southport was destined to be the south end of Humboldt Bay what Arcata Wharf was to North Bay. When the railroad was in operation, many steamers that operated between San Francisco and Eureka called to pick up freight and passengers. The busiest time of year was in the fall when the crops were being rushed to market. But there was trouble ahead. In the winter of 1878, a heavy storm swept Humboldt County. The wind blew so hard that the water of the ocean and bay went higher than it ever had before. After the storm was over, the railroad was a complete wreck. The track that skirted Table Bluff had been lifted from its mooring and thrown up against the bluff, several hundred yards from its original location! This put an end to Heney's railroad and his dream of Southport. Some years back, one could still find sections of the wooden rails along the beach. Today, nothing remains of Southport or the railroad."
