Feb 15, 1912 - Carroll Times - Great was the sorrow of Carroll County people Saturday afternoon when it was whispered that Mrs. Joseph Collison had passed away at the hospital. It was only two weeks ago that she was brought to St. Anthony hospital in the hopes that an operation would give her a continued lease on life. The operation was deferred several days because of her weakened condition but hopes for a betterment in her health were had. However, she did not seem to improve and all thoughts of saving her were given up. It was only since about the first of the year that her condition of health demanded medical attention. Previous to that time she had enjoyed fair health and no thoughts of the seriousness of her condition were given either by her or the immediate family. However, an examination showed that her life was in danger unless an operation could be performed to relieve her of her ills. As above stated, however, this proved a vain effort. Anna Wolfe was born in Ireland in May 1845, and came to this country with her parents when a young child. They settled in LaSalle county, Illinois, and there she grew to young womanhood. In February, 1874, she was united in marriage to Joseph Collison and shortly afterwards they moved to this county and settled in the neighborhood which has since been their home. Several years later they moved to the place now occupied and upon which they had recently completed a modern farm home. To this union were born eight sons and one daughter, eight of which are living, one son Arthur having died in 1904. The living who mourn the death of a loving mother are Wm., of Halbur; John, of Arcadia township; Joseph, Frank and Maurice, at home; Fred, Daniel of Marshalltown, and the daughter May. Mrs. Collison also reared a niece, Anna Wolfe, aged 13 years and who is one of the family. She also leaves to mourn her two sisters and a brother. A nephew from Algona was present to attend the funeral. Six of her stalwart sons acted as pallbearers and laid the remains of their beloved mother in the final resting place. The funeral services were held from St. Joseph's church Monday forenoon. In the death of Mrs. Collison the county loses one of its most respected pioneer settlers. The husband loses a loving and excellent wife, the sons and daughters lose a kind, indulgent and true mother and friend. It is a death that is indeed sad. She had labored long and well in raising to manhood and womanhood her children. Her labors were about to be rewarded and she to enjoy a rest from her toil. A new home, including all the comfort's of a modern home, had been erected and she and her husband were about to enjoy the fruits of their labors by retiring from active management of the big farm. The home will be a lonely one without her cheering and kindly presence and the bereaved family has the sympathy of the community in their loss.
