Anne Carstens, 88 years of age, Of Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of Beatrice, NE. passed away at the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa Saturday afternoon, January 3, 2004. She was born on June 23, 1915 at Wahoo, NE. She was a 1932 graduate of Sterling High School, Sterling, NE., a 1938 graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Bachelor of Arts degree and from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Law with a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree. She and Fred W. Carstens were married on January 14, 1940 at Sterling, NE. and they then moved to Beatrice, NE. and established the Carstens&Carstens Law Firm. She served as the city attorney for Beatrice, NE. from 1956-1966. She was past chairman of the Municipal Law Section of the Nebraska State Bar Association. She received the Women's Division of the Beatrice Chamber of Commerce Service Award in 1973. She was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice, NE.; the Nebraska State Bar Association and the Gage County Bar Association. She was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and the Mortar Board of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She was a past president of the Soroptimist Club; Past Regent of D.A.R.; life member of the Gage County Historical Society; member of the Beatrice Art Guild and the American Legion Auxiliary, all in Beatrice, NE. She was very committed to the Adults Literacy Program. She enjoyed raising flowers (especially Roses), playing bridge, cooking, and oil painting with a group of friends on a weekly basis. Survivors include 2 daughters, Katherine L. Safris and her husband Charles of Urbandale, Iowa and Julia Anne Hartley and her husband John of Pittsburgh, KS.; 4 grandchildren, William Safris II, David Safris, Janet Safris and Dr. Rhea Anne Hartley; great granddaughter Emily Anne Safris; brother in law Renken Carstens of Beatrice; and sisters in law Anne Ellig of Cook, NE. and Helen Walters of Georgetown, TX; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Rhea (Lamoreaux) Pickett; husband Fred W. Carstens (1999); brother Thomas Pickett. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, January 10, 2004 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice, NE. with Reverend Dr. Delmar Wiemers and Reverend Richard Fruehling officiating. Interment will be at 11:45 A.M. Saturday at the Evergreen Home Cemetery in Beatrice, NE. The body will lie in state Friday from 9:00 A.M. - 9:00 P.M. at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice and at the church one hour preceding the service on Saturday. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice. A family prayer services will be held at 9:45 A.M. Saturday at the church. A memorial has been established to the St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice and the Beatrice Humane Society with the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice in charge. Messages of condolence may be sent to [email protected] They will be forwarded to the family. The Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice is in charge of the services.
