She was discovered by her mother, who saw at once that something unusual was the matter. Mrs Baxter sent at once for Dr A C Baxter, who was an uncle of the young lady, but when he arrived the young lady was beyond human help, having breathed her last just a few minutes before her uncle reached her bedside. When the sad tragedy became known, the shock was terrible to her many relatives and friends, being a great favorite with them. They could hardly credit the terrible story that one so young and fair had taken her own life. But such seems to be the fact. The young lady left a note to her mother, in which she assigned as a cause for taking her own life that her health was shattered and she did not care to live. It is said that she left other letters to different friends, but we do not know their contents. She seems to have contemplated the act at least several hours before she carried it into execution. On Friday she attended the funeral of her cousin's wife, Mrs William Stoudemire, and remained with the family until Saturday afternoon. On her way hoe she purchased the carbolic acid at Elloree and kept it until she used it about 12 o'clock Saturday night. Her mother, hearing a strange noise in the young lady's room, found her in a dying condition. Miss Baker was about 18 years of age, and was attending the Columbia College. She was home on the Christmas holdiday when the awful tragedy was enacted. On Wednesday, December 223, she spent the day in Orangeburg at the home of Mrs Jas L Sims, who was a near relative. She was then on her way home from college, and seemed to be in the best of spirits, but complained of having worked too hard at college and feeling broken up from it. It is a known fact that she did work very hard at college, and no doubt this caused her mind to become temporarily affected. Miss Baxter was a handsome, bright young lady, and there was nothing in her home life to cause her to take the awful step she did. Overwork while at college, we fear, was the cause of the terrible tragedy. Her mind gave way temporarily and while in that state, she took the poison and ended her young life. She was a fine young woman, with many attractive qualities, both personally and mentally, and we can not account for her rash act, except on the supposition that her mind gave way under the strain to which she subjected it. We can hardly realize that the bright, handsome young girl who a little over a week ago graced our home with her charming presence is dead, and that, too by her own hand. But such is the case.
