Antonie Pavlik was born March 30, 1845, in Velnary, Bohemia, and spent her childhood days and grew to womanhood in that country. In 1869 she was married to Vaclav Jelen and in 1878 they came to this country and settled at Omaha, where they lived for six years. The family then moved to Jefferson county where they resided one year, and then to Holt county, where they homesteaded and lived the following five years. In 1890 they came to this county and moved onto a farm eight and one half miles west of Verdigre. To this union were born ten children, five boys and five girls, five children having died in infancy. In 1896 Mr. Jelen died on Easter Sunday and during the next twelve years Mrs. Jelen carefully managed the farm and brought up a family of courteous, industrious children. Her oldest son, James, then took over the farm and she lived with her youngest son, John, for the following ten years, and last autumn returned to the old home, where she died on Sunday, April 13th, at 8:06 a.m., at the age of seventy-four years and thirteen days. Mrs.Jelen was of a kind, loving disposition and had won a host of friends during her residence in this vicinity. She was over industrious, careful and saving and shrived to succeed that she might rest easily and comfortably in her declining years. She had been failing in health for some months, but without a complaint, always bearing her burden and troubles to herself, seeking not to complain to others. In her passing from this life, a noble and loving parent, a woman of ideals and a lasting friend has gone to her reward. Deceased leaves five children: John, on the old farm; James, who lives west of this city; Miss Anna Jelen, Supt. of Verdigre Schools; Anton Jelen, dealer in real estate; and Mrs. Mary Niki of this city. She also leaves six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services were conducted by frank Liska at the home of James Jelen on Thursday of last week, and interment made in the Jelen cemetery.
