Description	:	Mrs. Arabella F. Smith, 90, former resident of Fort Madison, died at St. Francis Hospital at 4:45 this morning, July 11, 1936. She had been a resident of the hospital in Burlington since suffering a stroke eight years ago. She was the mother of Roy C. Smith of the Unterkircher Funeral Home. Smith, 90, former resident of Fort Madison, died at St. Francis Hospital at 4:45 this morning, July 11, 1936. She had been a resident of the hospital in Burlington since suffering a stroke eight years ago. She was the mother of Roy C. Smith of the Unterkircher Funeral Home. Born in Fort Madison February 20, 1846, she was the daughter of pioneer residents of Lee County. Mrs. Smith was the former Arabella Cutler, and was the last of her family. The Cutler family moved to Lee County from Indiana in 1829, and her father Otway was a director of the Santa Fe Railroad. He was instrumental in getting the road built through Fort Madison where it has large shops. On October 19, 1868, she was married to George H. Smith, who was in the hardware business for years in Fort Madison. Mr. Smith died in 1917. A daughter [Mrs. A.N. Anthes] died in 1926, and three brothers also preceded her in death. Surviving besides Mr. Smith are a granddaughter Molly Virginia Smith of Burlington, and nieces and nephews. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Episcopal Church. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. from St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Fort Madison, Rev. LaMont, Keokuk, officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery. -- Fort Madison Evening Democrat, July 11, 1936, page 8. NOTE: No record has been found that Otway Cutler was a director of the Santa Fe Railroad. However, he did head a group of business leaders who raised the funds to build a railroad bridge over the Mississippi, which was the incentive for the Santa Fe to build its route between Chicago and Kansas City through Fort Madison.
