At the time of his death Mr. Smith was aged 78 years, 4 months, and 19 days. The deceased was born at Raunds, Northamptonshire, England, October 1, 1838, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Anthony Smith, who were among the early Fort Madison pioneers and the parents of a large family, still largely represented here. Dr. Smith being the first practicing dentist here and probably in Iowa. The family came to Fort Madison when George Smith was but a child [1847], this city remaining his home for the remainder of his life. He attended the local schools, was prominently identified with several local business firms prior to entering business for himself, from which he retired several years ago. He was a hardware merchant, successfully conducting a business which developed that trade in Fort Madison and on a scale larger than ever attempted in this section. His business associates, successively, were his late brother Edwin D. Smith, Otway C. Cutler, and Ekin Smith. The Shreves hardware store in the 800 block on Second Street was formerly the Smith hardware store and the Hesser & Hale store before that. Mr. Smith was united in marriage with Miss Arabella (Belle) Cutler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otway Cutler on October 19, 1868. She survives, the home being at 723 Fourth Street. There are two children, Roy C. Smith and Mrs. Albert (Nelle) Anthes, both of this city. Charles A. Smith of Victorville, California, Albert R. Smith and Frank R. Smith of this city are brothers. Enlisting several months after declaration of the Civil War, Mr. Smith served with Company D, Seventh Iowa Infantry, being mustered in at the age of 23 years on September 16, 1862, and discharged at Washington, D.C. May 26, 1865, at the expiration of his enlistment. Mr. Smith’s clerical talents put his services in demand and throughout the war he held responsible positions with the quartermaster department. When his brother Fred was wounded and sent to the hospital in Keokuk, George was sent with him, doing a hospital assignment while his brother was recovering from his wound. Fraternally, Mr. Smith was a member of the local Elks lodge. At one time he had membership with the Odd Fellows. He was a member and faithful attendant at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, where he held the position of senior warden. In the constant practice of his greatest pleasure, which was trying to please others, and which is the greatest monument to his memory, was his death. The plaint of a street youngster to save his little dog from the attack of another dog drew only the thought and pleasure of aiding someone, something in distress and instinctively he was heeding the cry of the child, heedless of any personal danger in the pleasure of pacifying the sorrowing little one. George Smith (age 2) was listed in 1841 England Census with his parents Anthony and Elizabeth Smith and his brother Edwin (age 6 months) residing in Wellingborough civil parish, in Northamptonshire County. Anthony is listed as a watch maker. According to the 1850 and 1860 Lee County census schedules, the children of Anthony and Elizabeth Smith, in age order, were: George, John, Edwin, Frederick, Georgeanna, William, Charles A., Albert R., and Frank R. In the 1860 Fort Madison City Directory, George H. Smith is listed as the proprietor of George H. Smith & Bro., and his residence is on the south side of 6th Street, between Elm and Cedar. His mother Elizabeth is listed at the same address and is described as the widow of Anthony.
