Description	:	Mary Rudisill Cutler, wife of our esteemed fellow citizen, Otway Culter, died at her home on Fourth Street about four o’clock this morning [February 4, 1895]. The messenger of death came unexpectedly and as a result the home is saddened, the hosts of true friends grieve the loss of a good woman and another of the mothers of our present day civilization has passed to her reward. The messenger of death came unexpectedly and as a result the home is saddened, the hosts of true friends grieve the loss of a good woman and another of the mothers of our present day civilization has passed to her reward. Mrs. Cutler, nee Mary Jane Rudisill, was a native of Ohio [born in Chillicothe, Ohio, November 24, 1826, the daughter of Eleazar W. Rudisill and Rosannah Haynes] and was united in marriage with Otway Cutler January 8, 1843. She has been a constant resident of this county since that time. The family formerly resided in Washington Township but about 19 years ago removed to this city, which has since been their residence. Mrs. Cutler has been subject to that troublesome disease asthma and often had smothering spells. She had not been able to rest in bed for two or three nights but last week she had gone to bed and it was there she was found dead this morning about four o’clock as near as can be told. It is supposed that she took one of the smothering spells and that death resulted from that. Besides her aged husband she is survived by four children, Mrs. Geo. H. Smith and Otway C. Cutler of this city, and Messrs. George and Thomas Cutler of Farragut, Iowa. She also has other relatives in this city besides brothers and sisters here and elsewhere. The funeral services will take place at the residence at 10 o’clock Wednesday morning. -- Fort Madison Evening Democrat, February 4, 1895, page 3.
