Hawkins Archibald Haley Hawkins, 88, of 903 Fillmore St., died at Lynchburg General Hospital today at 12:40 a.m. Born in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Nelson Spottswood Payne Hawkins and Delia Brown Haley Hawkins. He was a retired grocer and ran the Hawkins Grocery Store at the corner of Pierce Street and Park Avenue from 1916 to 1955. He was an active member of Memorial United Methodist Church where he was a member of the official board for many years. He was also a member of the Men's Bible Class of the church, Royal Arch Chapter No. 10, DeMolay Commandery No. 4, Kazim Temple in Roanoke, the Lynchburg Shrine Club, Lynchburg Elks Lodge No. 321 and the Travelers Protective Association. He was a member of Marshall Masonic Lodge No. 39 AF&AM for over 50 years. His wife was the late Irene Berkley Hawkins. He is survived by three sons, A.H. Hawkins, Jr. of Charlottesville and W.T. Hawkins and R.E. Hawkins, both of Lynchburg; three daughters, Mrs. E.W. Gregory of Atlanta, Ga., Mrs. B.G. Olsom of Fairfax and Mrs. S.H. Canada of Lynchburg; one [half] sister, Mrs. R.M. [Mazie] Biggs of Lynchburg; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at Memorial United Methodist Church Monday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. David J. Palmer. Burial will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park with Masonic rites. Diuguid Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
