Born June 29, 1926, in Lynchburg, Va., to Archibald Haley Hawkins and Irene Berkley, he was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 40 years, Arlene W. Hawkins. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Byron Olson (Helen) of Fairfax, Va., and two brothers, A.H. Hawkins, Jr., of Marietta, S.C., and Robert E. Hawkins of Lynchburg, Va. Mr. Hawkins is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Edward Gregory (Mae) of Atlanta, Ga., and Mrs. James Hewlett (Sarah) of Lynchburg, Va., and a step-daughter, Kay Whitney McClanan Foster of West Palm Beach, Fla. Tom graduated from E.C. Glass High School on a Friday in June, 1943, and entered Virginia Military Institute the next morning to join the Class of 1947. After one year of college, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served with George Company, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division, in the Battle of Okinawa. He was wounded in Okinawa and received the Purple Heart and several other medals for combat. At the end of the war, his entire division was sent to China for occupation duty. On July 4, 1946, he was discharged from the Marine Corps and returned to VMI to complete his degree in Civil Engineering in the Class of '49-C. He participated in sports in high school and college and enjoyed sports throughout his life. Tom was a 50-year and honorary member of Marshall Lodge #39, A.F. & A.M. He was also a 50-year member of Royal Arch Chapter #10, DeMolay Commandery #4, Kazim Shrine Temple, and Lynchburg Shrine Club. In 1966 Mr. Hawkins formed Hawkins-Graves, Inc., with Paul G. Graves. He served as president until the company was sold in June 1996. Tom and Arlene enjoyed music and the arts, travel, gardening, and various community causes. He was a generous friend to those he knew. A graveside service, with Masonic Rites, will be held at Fort Hill Memorial Park, 5196 Fort Avenue, on Saturday, July 16, 2011, at 10:30 a.m., officiated by the Rev. Catharine Montgomery, Rector of Grace Memorial Episcopal Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels, PO Box 1388, Lynchburg, VA 24504.
