Archie Junior Batcheller, son of Archie H. and Clara (Hansen) Batcheller, was born in Paton Township on Oct. 20, 1919 and died in Dawson Township on Sept. 24, 1955 at the age of 35 years, 11 months and four days. Jay, as he was commonly called by his many friends, grew to manhood near his birthplace and attended school in Paton. He graduated with the Class of 1937 at Paton High School. After his graduation, he farmed for a short time before being called to serve his country, Sept. 22, 1941. He served as an aviation Machinist Mate First Class in the United States Navy and was assigned to the Pacific Theater for several months. Jay was discharged at the United States Navy Personnel Separation Center at Minneapolis, MN on Dec. 12, 1945. On Feb. 16, 1946, Jay was united in marriage to Mary Joyce in San Diego, CA. They came to Iowa in April 1946. He then entered into partnership in the Standard Oil station in Paton with his brother, Harley. Jay was a member of the Gem Masonic Lodge No. 429 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Paton. Survivors include his wife, Mary; three children ages 3, 5 and 8; a step-daughter age 15; his parents; all of Paton; two brothers and two sisters: Martin of Gowrie, Elizabeth Tourte of Paton, Eva Walker of Jefferson, and Harley of Paton; also other relatives and many friends. A man of happy disposition, Jay will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was the father of Patty, Mike, Kathy, Jaylene and Jay (not yet born). This was a tragic event, and everyone in the community was so sad for the family. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Jay Batcheller, 35-year-old Paton service station operator, was killed in an automobile accident on a county road in Dawson Township late Friday night. It was the second traffic fatality in Greene County so far this year. The accident occurred on County Road H, one mile east of the Dawson Township "brick schoolhouse". Batcheller and Charles Erickson, also 35, and a farmer near Paton, were on their way from Gowrie to Jefferson. They ran into a dead end and plowed into the bank of ditch after crossing County H at a "T" intersection. It is possible that the two young men thought they were on County J, north-south country trunk road which passes the schoolhouse one mile to the west. Skid marks are visible for only 27 feet from the point of impact. The 1950 Ford club coupe, owned by Erickson and driven by Batcheller, was severely damaged, but not demolished, leading local authorities to believe that the car was probably being driven at a reasonable speed. The two men were thrown forward when the car lunged into the ditch, and both hit the top of the car, careening against the sun visors. Batcheller's neck was broken, and he was dead on arrival at the Greene County Hospital. His chest was bruised, and he received several facial lacerations. Erickson is still in the hospital here. He sustained broken ribs, severe cuts and bruises and a serious eye injury. He was unconscious for several hours. The two were found by Lloyd and Raymond Dagit, teenage sons of Mr. and Mrs. Titus Dagit of Dawson Township, about 12:10 am Saturday. It is believed that the accident occurred about 11:30 p.m. Friday.
